Conservative Lawmaker: DeLay Should Quit

NewsMax.com Wires

Saturday, April 16, 2005

WASHINGTON -- One of Congress' most conservative members on Friday became the second House Republican to urge Majority Leader Tom DeLay to step aside because of the ethics scrutiny he's facing.

"If the majority leader were to temporarily step aside so that these trumped up charges can be dealt with in a less hostile environment, as they have proven to be an unnecessary distraction, it may be a productive move," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.

Tancredo's comments come after Connecticut Rep. Chris Shays, a moderate Republican, urged DeLay to resign from his leadership position at the beginning of the week. Also, Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, said DeLay needs to answer questions about his ethics.

Tancredo, elected in 1998, said he believes all charges against DeLay, R-Texas, "lack merit" and are "being leveled in the hopes of bringing him down and with him, the Republican majority."

Tancredo is known in the House for his tough stand on immigration and has 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union for votes and his position on issues.

DeLay has been dogged by questions for months about his overseas travel, corporate fundraising in 2002 for Texas legislative campaigns, campaign payments to family members and his connections to a lobbyist now under federal investigation.

Some GOP colleagues have suggested his continuing ethics controversy is harming the GOP, while others say the criticism has been orchestrated by Democrats and their liberal allies.

DeLay has said he is eager to appear before the leaders of the House ethics committee and give "everything I have" in connection with allegations of misconduct. Spokesman Dan Allen provided a similar comment Friday and cited a list of accomplishments by House Republicans with DeLay as majority leader.

Before DeLay can meet with the ethics committee, Democrats and Republicans must resolve a deadlock over rules Republicans pushed through the House. Democrats oppose the changes.

"Yep- Delay should quit- Tancredo should quit- George W.Bush should quit-Why we ough tleave the filthy mess to the Jacki
that have dictated the dialogue since WW Twice.Every Christian-every Patriot-every member of Congress NOT under
influence of the transmission belt to Soviet Communist
Dictatorship (the ACLU ) ought Quit. The Dems and the
Republicans have made Congress essentially irrelevant anyhow.Even President Bush acknoledged we are no longer that
system established 1776-1791but under the Oligarchy of
Despots. Our mere politicians believe we could not exist
independent of that extra Constitutional anti-American organ the U.N.That petty despot to the South believes we are
Mexico's cash cow and exist solely to protect Mexican jobs
and future. So everyone not progressive enough to be part
of the new world order of human bondage ought quit."

That's the best post on the thread IMHO.
Tom Delay is fairly conservative, however, NONE of the abominations that have become law would have passed without the influence of Tom Delay.
CFR
Prescription Drugs
Edu. Bill
Nationalizing airport screeners
None of these are in ANY way remotely related to conservative thought.
Give Tancredo a break.

I love the expression: "Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory." I hope Trancredo enjoys his fleeting fame!

>>>>>In conclusion, both men are really needed in the House of Representives and this issue of attacking both Tancredo and Delay needs to be put aside.

Tell that to Tancredo. It was not Tom Delay that attacked him.

You think so???? I don't. I won't support him. I am tired of people like him helping the Democrats destroy people in our party because they are standing in the way of Dems destroying everything I believe in. Would a Democrat get this kind of crap and would one of his own demand he step down. No way. Only Republicans turn on their own in cases like this. Who would want him as President when he can't even stand by a fellow congressman??? Who would trust him??? He's toast.

Quite frankly, I believe that Tancredo still has the chance of becoming a rising star in the Republican Party as well as the frontrunner for the 2008 Republican Presidential Primary

Nope. He wouldn't be for several reasons. First of all, he is a one issue wonder. yeah yeah yeah ACU blah blah blah, what is he known for? His stance on immigration. The rest is just window dressing. Another point, he is coming out of the HoR. If John Kasich couldnt do it, Tancredo CERTAINLY will not. Third, he has already alienated much of the current administration, one which has much power within the GOP. Now he has attacked Delay and has now alienated much of the conservative base.

This guy is toast. He will probably stay in the HoR (how about them term limits?)

I just feel that people need to understand that this whole fiasco of focusing on Tom Delay as well as saying crap about Tom Tancredo need to stop

This whole fiasco is an attack against Tom Delay. Makes me wonder why. (hammer envy?)
I am curious why Tom Tancredo is joining forces with those on the attack. (& that's how it looks from here in the stands)
I have no other issue with Tom Tancredo, but would really like to know.

Amazing how the leftists are now using Tancredo as a "sane voice in the republican party" when not that long ago the same leftists were portraying him as a right wing whacko due to his stance on illegal immigration.

Tancredo has blown any chance whatsoever to advance into a leadership position with the GOP. He's proven he's a freakin' idiot, politically.

Not only is he wrong about DeLay, he's siding with Sheila Jackson-Lee and her ilk.

Yes, he's getting his 15 minutes of fame from this, which is what wanted.

He's getting a lifetime of scorn from me.

#17..Please clarify 'toast'. 1.--You agree with the statement of the poster...and 'toast' his comment? 2.--You disagree with the poster's statement and believe tancredo is .....toast? :)

Option #2.

And I really really REALLY wanted to watch him implode in the primaries

Before Tom made these stupid comments, what issues did you disagree with him on? He has a 100% rating from the ACU.

It's not that I disagree with his stance on issues, but he is a disagreeable person in general and not someone I would like to vote for personally.

ACU ratings are good and all, but delivery is important too. Not only that, but he is taking sides with the MSM on the Delay thing and personally, I think his chances of being a viable GOP Presidential candidate just went up in smoke, not that he was very viable in the first place from a realistic standpoint.
