Coast Guard intercepts boat of illegal Ukrainian immigrants off Port Salerno
PORT SALERNO The U.S. Coast Guard detained seven Ukrainians and two boat operators after interdicting a sailboat heading in the St. Lucie Inlet during the weekend, federal officials said.
The guard intercepted the vessel during a routine check about 10:48 a.m. Sunday, said Art Bullock, a spokesman for the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
Bullock said federal authorities were investigating the incident and looking at whether there would be any criminal charges.
He said those aboard the sailboat were being held on a Coast Guard cutter because they never made it to land.
Bullock said he could release no other information about where the vessel had originated or those found on board. The Coast Guard declined to comment.
