Teacher forces preschooler to relieve herself in front of other students

A Knox County teacher is back on the job after making a pre-school student relieve herself in a bucket in front of other students.

It happened in early March to a little girl at the Sam E. Hill Family Community Center.

Sheila Knight was put on leave while the school system looked into the allegations.

DCS also investigated and found no evidence of abuse.

Knight later admitted to the accusations, called it "a severe lapse in judgment," and got a strong written reprimand. School officials say that was the strongest punishment allowed at the time.

Knight, who has worked for Knox County Schools for almost 20 years, is back on the job.

Of course schooling outside the home does not change any of those admonitions to parents. Where do you get the idea that children so educated don't look to the parents for instruction? Mine always have. Or that parents abandon all influence over such children? How silly.

It takes only a cursory glance at the verses to know that you are distorting them tremendously as to their meaning. They are NOT social prescriptions but advice to parents regarding their PERSONAL interactions with their children. Proverbs and Psalms are my favorites in the Bible and I have read them many times.

There is nothing "rash" in pointing out that you are distorting the meaning of those verses. What is "rash" is the statement that Proverbs is applicable to education in the 21st century any more than it is to Nuclear Physics.

I was speaking of the Hebrew word almah which does not mean virgin. It means young woman. And before you say, "Well it is assumed that a young unmarried woman is a virgin", Judaism is passed along the mothers's line. Why? Well, even back then they knew that one always knows who their momma is, but maybe not who their daddy is.

However, I don't see a problem with supplementing a child's education with knowledge beyond that of the parent, which inevitably involves outside parties. Your arguments (in this thread) don't seem to allow for that.

The primary role of education is with the parents. I don't believe that I have stated that children cannot be taught other things (music, for example) by outside instructors. This is a far cry from dropping the kid off at school in the morning and letting the public schools fill their head with mush for 6 hours.

No it points out that one should recognize all costs and arguments using statistical data should understand what that data is reflecting. It is not reflecting comparision between two methods of instruction but a whole set of variables which must be disaggregated before accuracy can be obtained. It is like comparing a BMW to a Yugo.

As far as I have seen the most expensive school districts top out at 12 grand. My youngest attended a private school which costs about 6 and was not better in instruction than the public school attended by his brother.

teacher should have been thrown in jail...there is no excuse for this adult to make an example of this child in front of her peers....I shudder to think the psychological effect this will have on the kid in the future....what in the #&#&#&$$^ is wrong with these damn teachers?

What you mentioned reminded me when I was in a bowling alley daycare. My mom along with many other women would bowl and us kids would be in the daycare. I remembered they had a bucket especially for us boys to pee into. The girls, had to use the sitdown potty. I barely remember seeing a lot of the girls using it but the "teachers" made no effort what I remember to protect their privacy. This was back in 1973 or 1974 - before I went into Kindergarten. At that age, you don't care but you do when you get into 1st or 2nd grade. My six year old is getting to the point of wanting privacy.

my three year old's classroom has a bathroom opening off the side and that door is never closed - to prevent abuse or allegations thereof. Standard procedure in other schools I have seen also.

So, you're really not interested in knowing anything about the public school environment I currently have my kids in. My level of involvement has no bearing upon it. The age of the child isn't a factor. The curriculum isn't a factor. You're just willing to let a monolithic statement stand like that.

You see, I think you've actually gotten a skewed perspective on exactly what is involved in the Proverbs "education". I think it's pretty clear that children are supposed to learn our values and morals from us, and to the extent that an outside environment screws that up, I'm with you. However, I can't follow your overreaching interpretation of Proverbs any more than I can go stone an adulterer to death.

There is nothing wrong with leading your family by the Bible the problem is trying to apply it where it was never intended to apply. It was never intended to apply to science, math, foreign languages, medicine or even animal husbandry.

It would be good for us if we paid more attention to the Bible but it is not the only means of instruction God intends us to use.
