COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A former soldier who pleaded guilty to beating up another soldier who was on leave from Iraq was sentenced Tuesday, NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported.
Brent Cornwell, of Blacklick, was sentenced to 180 days in jail and five years of probation after pleading guilty in December to a charge of felonious assault. Cornwell will be able to serve the jail time during weekends, Bowersock reported.
Cornwell, a former soldier, got into a fight with Foster Barton last summer in the parking lot after a Toby Keith concert at Germain Amphitheater. Barton, of Grove City, was on leave while he recovered from injuries he suffered in Iraq.
Barton received a Purple Heart for his military service in Iraq. He almost lost his leg after a Humvee he was riding in ran over a landmine.
Cornwell told the judge in December that the fight started after the two exchanged insults about the other's military unit.
Cornwell apologized in court on Tuesday.
"I accept responsibility for what happened that night," Cornwell said. "I wish I could take it back."
Barton will return to his unit next week and then possibly could return to Iraq, Bowersock reported.
I've seen this happen. It's pathetic.
I once had an individual insult my EOD unit by saying it was full of perverts, I agreed and explained that those are the good guys in it.
They were drunk and got in a fight, yes?
I worked in the Corps of Engineers with a woman whose last name was Bowersox.
The rest of the story. Gee, I missed the part about the argument before the fight back when it happened. Not that I think that removes any responsibility from the guy.
seen it happen? ha, try being a Marine stationed on an Army post
Now why would you try to have us believe a soldier would give a marine a hard time?
I remember this story. It was originally reported that the soldier was beat-up by an unidentified anti-war protester (or at least that's my memory of it).
That's the one.
I knew a few Marines stationed on an Air Force base- an advanced technical training school. They were serious about studying the course material. One was a woman. We got together and eventually an Army woman and Navy guy joined our little study group. 6 hours of class and 4-6 hours of homework every day. We quizzed each other about obscure things on schematics and functions of modules in all this equipment for 2 days before a test. We all graduated over 90 %. And we all walked to this semi-biker-western bar right off-base to celebrate with free beer while playing pool. Two days to recuperate and pack before flying away on Monday all over the world:)
And I'm sure you were quiet and modest and never did a thing to bring it on yourself...

lol My uncle used to regale me with tails of how they tormented sailors. He spent some time in the brig over an incident that involved cow manure, the milk supply, and a warship. Of course, they could have predicted that while he was in bootcamp which took him six months to complete. For some reason, in bootcamp they don't count time in the brig toward training.
Stupid Jarhead ... you weren't stationed there, you were lost!!! ;-)
Nah...nobody is that stupid.
Marines always treat corpsmen as brothers.... they hold them in very high regards especially if the unit ever was in a combat situation...It might be the PenVK or Rocephin for the drip or clap stateside...., but once you've seen the elephant Marines worship a guy with a sidearm and medical bag.
Rather naw off my own leg, than let that POS near it.
