ABCNEWS PETER JENNINGS LUNG CANCER
**Exclusive**
Peter Jennings and David Westin sent the following e-mails to their ABC News colleagues this morning:
David Westin's e-mail
This morning, Peter Jennings told his senior staff at World News Tonight that yesterday afternoon he was diagnosed with lung cancer. I include below the full text of Peters note to the group of people with whom he works most closely. He will begin outpatient treatment next week here in New York. Its both Peters and my expectation that he will anchor World News Tonight during the period of treatment to the extent he can do so comfortably; but, we should also expect him to be off the broadcast from time to time, depending on how he feels. Charlie Gibson, Elizabeth Vargas, and others will be substituting for Peter as necessary and when their other responsibilities permit.
All of us at ABC News have watched over the years as Peter has led us on various assignments with strength and with courage. Weve done our best to support him in these endeavors. Now, Peters been given a tough assignment. Hes already bringing to this new challenge the courage and strength weve seen so often in his reporting from the field and in anchoring ABC News. I know that all of us will give him every bit of support that he needs and asks for. Peter will once again lead the way, but we will stand with him at every turn.
Peters Email
Dear All Forgive me the group mailing but it seems the easiest way to tell a lot of people I care for .. about a change in my life. I have been diagnosed with lung cancer. Yes, it was quite a surprise. As you all know, this is a challenge. I begin chemo-therapy next week. I will continue to do the broadcast. There will be good days and bad, which means that some days I may be cranky and some days really cranky! Almost 10 million Americans are living with cancer. I am sure I will learn from them how to cope with the facts of life that none of us anticipated. In all the years I have worked here I have had the most outstanding support from this news division. Hundreds of you have been like family. It feels good to have such a family right now.
Peter
George Harrison also smoked like a chimney though vegetarian most of his life. Ciggies brought him down too. One can smoke and live a long life. My father is living proof of that. But you had better have the constitution to handle it
(Dad has not smoked for ten years. He smoked cigars, pipes and cigarettes)
Prayers for Peter and his family.
You are right.
I have friend with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (the Jackie O cancer), and she's been kicking its ass for five years now. She gets it, then she beats it back.
Amazing!
The most aggressive type is small-cell lung cancer. It killed my FIL just a few weeks ago. If he's got that, he will indeed be gone soon. Chemo will extend his life by about six months. W/O treatment, he's dead in 2-4 months.
I will give him the same amount no more, no less of sympathy, well wishes, and encouragement that he gave to Terri Shivo and to all of our brave men and women in the Military whether it be Iraq or VietNam.
I probably shouldn't say this but Jennings has always offended the sh*t out of me...
Yes, God Bless Peter. I can tell you one thing about his future. If he survives his perspective on life, politics and nearly everything else with which he comes in contact will change.
In World War II they used to say there were no atheists in Fox Holes. I can tell you it is impossible to believe in atheism when they look you in the eye and say you only have weeks to live.
WOW...Well...if he'll do chemo along with this chinese herbal treatment, I mentioned, he'll live lots longer than 6 months. National Cancer Society here in the states tested this treatment....80-85% cure rate is what their stats show. Stage 4 was different however patients still lived yrs with that herbal treatment.
If Jennings has small-cell (and he might, based on his smoking pattern), there is no Stage 4, only limited stage (25% 2-year survivability) and extensive stage (0% 2-year survivability). SCLC is 15-20% of all LC cases.
If they mention surgery as an option, he has some other form of the disease and will probably live longer than 4 months.
Liberal or not, I really hope he pulls through this. I hope he caught it early. I hope he gets better. And he QUIT smoking years ago?! Jeez. Think I'm going to give quitting another try, myself.
We lost a young family member (35) to a rare form of lung cancer. He didn't smoke.
Prayers for Mr. Jennings and his family, esp. for a deeper realization of their own mortality and a true repentence.
Yeah.......
Looks the type is right. He's shown amazing life force and IQ to get to where he has but all of us are brought down, eventually. Let's admit he lived a life in 66 years that 99% of people couldn't live if given 132
That chinese treatment is NOT cheap...but worth it...good friend had stage 4 throat cancer...he's now cancer free...due to the chinese herbal treatment.
He had an extremely aggressive type of cancer....95-99% are the stats on death rate for that cancer.
When he let me know about his cancer I started a world-wide investigation and found this amazing treatment. Of course it's well known in Asia but not in the states.

An excellent idea!
May the Lord be with him and his family. Bummer.
