ABCNEWS PETER JENNINGS LUNG CANCER
**Exclusive**
Peter Jennings and David Westin sent the following e-mails to their ABC News colleagues this morning:
David Westin's e-mail
This morning, Peter Jennings told his senior staff at World News Tonight that yesterday afternoon he was diagnosed with lung cancer. I include below the full text of Peters note to the group of people with whom he works most closely. He will begin outpatient treatment next week here in New York. Its both Peters and my expectation that he will anchor World News Tonight during the period of treatment to the extent he can do so comfortably; but, we should also expect him to be off the broadcast from time to time, depending on how he feels. Charlie Gibson, Elizabeth Vargas, and others will be substituting for Peter as necessary and when their other responsibilities permit.
All of us at ABC News have watched over the years as Peter has led us on various assignments with strength and with courage. Weve done our best to support him in these endeavors. Now, Peters been given a tough assignment. Hes already bringing to this new challenge the courage and strength weve seen so often in his reporting from the field and in anchoring ABC News. I know that all of us will give him every bit of support that he needs and asks for. Peter will once again lead the way, but we will stand with him at every turn.
Peters Email
Dear All Forgive me the group mailing but it seems the easiest way to tell a lot of people I care for .. about a change in my life. I have been diagnosed with lung cancer. Yes, it was quite a surprise. As you all know, this is a challenge. I begin chemo-therapy next week. I will continue to do the broadcast. There will be good days and bad, which means that some days I may be cranky and some days really cranky! Almost 10 million Americans are living with cancer. I am sure I will learn from them how to cope with the facts of life that none of us anticipated. In all the years I have worked here I have had the most outstanding support from this news division. Hundreds of you have been like family. It feels good to have such a family right now.

There are a lot of classy posts on this thread. Glad to see it.
Here's to hoping for a speedy full recovery for Jennings.
Best wishes to Petah.
Thanks for the info. What a terrible ordeal, and sorry to hear about your wife.
At least having such a high profile case is helpful in raising funds to find a cure. Peter Jennings I'm sure has lots of rich friends that will gladly open their pocketbooks to help, and the inevitible media exposure will raise awareness of the cause to even higher levels. I hope and pray for his recovery.
Good thing he'll be treated by the American health system and not the Canadian.
Prayers.
I quit smoking in January after 26 years. I'm using Commit Nicotine Lozenges and it's actually been pretty easy. The few few days were a little rough. I highly recommend you give them a shot.
Can you imagine what the DUmmies would be saying if El Rushbo had been stricken (God forbid)?
"Can you imagine what the DUmmies would be saying if El Rushbo had been stricken (God forbid)?"
I can see what some of them are saying about Jennings right now. Apparently he wasn't liberal enough for some ("he was a parrot of Ken Starr" seems to be a common theme), and others are blaming Karl Rove. Some people just can't put politics aside.
Also, I don't think God is punishing Peter Jennings. Careful where you tread, "judge not, for one day you to shall be judged (Mt 7:1)". Peter Jennings will be judged by someone far more righteous than anyone here when his time comes. The least we can all do is hope that time does not come too soon for anyone.
Praying that he does well in his battle with cancer.
A prayer for you Peter.
I just heard Jennings on ABC News. His voice is definitely sounding bad. Actually I am somewhat surprised. I thought he might have voice problems but not so soon.
He sounded frightened. Really not a good situation all around. I don't think we've been told all the facts yet.
I wonder how hard the staff at ABC is working to tie this to W's National Guard record.
I quit smoking in 1988 after seeing a picture of a pink healthy lung next to a black smoker lung. It was gross. I had a bad week or two, then felt fine. But everyone is different, I was lucky I guess.
I can't say I blame him. His voice was much worse than I expected. What kind of treatment is given to lung cancer patients?
Prayers for a speedy recovery for Mr. Jennings.
Seems like you're getting beat up on things that many here say about many left leaning celebrities.
