That's the bottom line..
You do what you can with the "system" to CYA..

But when all is said and done, when your back is to the wall, survival is #1..

To be honest I'd like it so people had to prove they were responsible enough to own any dog. Most reputable dog breeders take a pretty serious interest in the type of home their dogs are going to. I wouldn't have a problem with a license to breed dogs and sell them. A dog is a huge responsibility no matter what breed, like a child they must be taught right from wrong and taught their place both in the family and in society. Also like a child if they are abused or neglected the chances of them growing up "bad" are very high. I don't have all the answers, but the same problems with dogs exist with kids and you don't need a license for those either.

On a side note here's the WWI Navy APBT mentioned earlier, the APBT was often used as a symbol of the USA at that time because of its admirable qualities.

"In all fairness, pets in general are not "useful" in any kind of utilitarian sense."

It is more then obvious you have not seen the reports on how dogs, when brought to nursing homes have been known to be responsible for various therapeutic effects. Among them are the lowering of blood pressure. There are many web sites that mention this. Here is one: http://www.holistic-online.com/stress/stress_pet-therapy.htm

I've owned and been around APBTs my life, they are brilliant, loyal dogs who are as loving and gentle as any other breed when raised properly. The problem is not the dog, it's the owner.

Same here. Out of the large number of APBT's I have been around (shows, fostering, training, etc) over the course of several years, I have never had one or seen one attack another human much less show aggression towards another human. Then again, the dogs that I am around are integrated into family settings and not left chained in the backyard isolated from humans. My own have never, ever been on a chain, are trained in obedience, and my female is a therapy dog for 2 local nursing homes. I have never had a problem with my male and female fighting as the female is a "motherly" type and basically treats the younger unrelated male as her own pup. But, I do know that the breed is naturally dog aggressive and I do not leave them together alone and unsupervised. If we must be away, they are each crated to PREVENT any potential problems. Our animals aren't left with small children unsupervised. No animal should be left with small children unsupervised. That is common sense.

My oldest APBT is now 2 years old.The only time she has ever shown aggression is about 2 weeks ago when a neighbor's bull terrier (those nasty little Spudz McKenzie dogs) came onto our property and attacked my younger male APBT while my youngest son was playing fetch with him. My female then promptly proceeded to drag him out of our yard. After doing so, she returned and stood guard on our front porch for nearly an hour. She could have literally shredded this smaller, albeit powerful, dog into pieces but did only what was necessary to remove him from the yard.

I do have to admit, that while my female loathes cats, she fancies herself as being one when trying to climb trees and catching mice (ewww).

I am not going to defend all APBT's because there are surely unstable ones in among them just as there are unstable dogs in all breeds. In my own experience with caring and educated owners, those whose animals are as much a part of their families as their own children are, and whose breeders are reputable, I have not seen anything indicating instability in those dogs. People who buy this breed of dog and cast them away to the outer yard chained up and away from regular human contact and influences, who do not provide obedience training and who try to further "toughen up" the dog by assorted practices are asking for trouble.

I would not recommend this particular breed to anyone not thoroughly educated on their nature or to anyone not willing to making a lifetime commitment to their animal. These types of people are the cause of excessive "backyard breeding" resulting in an over population of instable animals which in turn gives us tragedies such as the one in the posted article.

Great find on that navy sign. Do you know where I could get one of those. That is the sad thing - the American Pitbull Terrier has much of the spirit of America in it. That is why I love the breed. I like that it needs extra care to be great. America took a lot of work and sacrifice, and now we are the only world superpower, and although are freedoms are rapidly being taken away by bloated government we still have that "live free or die mentality". That is somewhat why I like the APBT - it is a tenacious at times, and yet it is incredibly loving and loyal.

That is because cats aren't powerful enough to do so. I am sure there are plenty of cat bites and scratches that happen, but they aren't serious enough to warrant a hospital visit. Cats suck. Has a cat ever saved someone's life? Are ther police cats? Are there search and rescue cats? etc. = NO because cats are basically semi-wild animals that have about as much character, and intelligence as a rat. However, eventhough stray cats are an epidemic in many areas - I would still not advocate banning cats.

A lot of the time you read about a "pit bull" attacking, it wasn't even a pit bull at all. Many dogs are erroneously classified as pit bulls, even mixes. That is a fact.

Did you know pits were used as SAR dogs after 9/11? I wonder if they were brought there to maul any children found in the wreckage...

Folks buy Neopolitan Mastiffs because their kid wants the "Harry Potter" dog.

That's a real dog? I thought it was CG.

Yeah really - finish em off right. I didn't know that though. That is cool. I wish these horrible owners would stop messing everything up for the rest of us. Same goes for irresponsible gun owners.

I hear ya, we need an APBT ping list so when the hysteria starts on these sorts of articles we can defend our dogs.

That is funny. The Neo Mastiff does look pretty crazy with all that extra skin and their sometimes red looking eyes. They were bred in the past to be gaurdian dogs - the owner wanted a ferocious gaurdian who could sneak up on intruders and attack without being seen. This is why they are black - so they could slip in and out of the darness to gaurd there property. I always thought that was kind of a cool trait in these dogs history.

Yeah, I always keep an eye out for them. I like discussing the issue because it is a problem, but many people have strong stereotypes when they here about it. That is why I like the fact that Teddy Roosevelt had APBTs - I think it is great that the man who had the philosophy "speak softly and carry a big stick" owned pitbulls. Because that is what responsible pitbull owners and lovers do. They are the type that don't look for trouble, but if trouble finds them or their family they are surely gonna be ready.
