Family's two pit bulls kill Hamtramck girl, 6
4/5/2005, 4:28 a.m. ET
The Associated Press

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) — Two pit bulls attacked and killed their owners' 6-year-old girl in the backyard of a home near Detroit, state police say.

Cassidy Jeter was killed Monday morning, said state police Lt. Harold Love.

The girl had known the pit bulls since they were puppies, The Detroit News said.

Cassidy and a younger child were walking down an alley next to the home about 9 a.m. when the dogs attacked, Love said. The family recently moved out of a home around the corner, and the dogs were still staying at that house. The alley separates the two homes.

"For some reason the dogs were loose, and one of them attacked the girl," Love said.

The other dog apparently joined the attack. The younger child climbed a fence to get away, and the girl's mother tried to save her daughter.

"The mother tried to beat the dogs off the girl with a 2-by-4," Love said. "She was screaming for help from the neighbors."

The girl was dead at the scene. Police shot the dogs to death.

Police in the Detroit enclave of Hamtramck asked state troopers to investigate because a person died and its officers used their weapons.

That's hilarious.

Water of any variety, in any setting, is something to revel in. Mud puddles in the woods. Snow piles. The water that collects in a pool on the driveway where the engineering was less than satisfactory.

Will swim until he drops. Wants to be outside in the rain. Will politely step into the tub for a batch (and then shake all over me when I turn to reach for the dog shampoo).

Any dog of any breed allowed to run loose then hurt someone needs to result in the owner getting charged for the crime. Murder, assault, etc... No excuses no exceptions. People have a right to live without fear of an irresponsible owner's dog.

I fully agree with that, my dog is always leashed when outside and I keep an eye on her whenever someone new comes over. She is well socialized, not even the least bit aggressive with dogs of either sex smaller or larger than she is. She also is good with kids, I have a couple friends who regularly bring their small children over and they pull on the dogs tail and wrestle with her and she is gentle as a lamb.

I'm sure there are some here though that think she should be put down just because of her breed though.

Why on Earth would someone own one of these dogs? Why on Earth would someone own these dogs with children in the picture? Sadly we see this story repeated on a regular basis.

I'm with you... I'm so sick of reading these stories, I could puke. Pit Bulls are good for nothing but killing.

I'll make you a deal, you bring your instruments, (my husband only plays a harmonica) and I'll send the pick up, the canoe and the lab (when he gets one)! You can all be in Valahalla!

Me and the rat dog will go to the mall!:)

Pippin the rat dog is the like that. Except he doesn't swim. If he hears me tell the kids to bathe the dog, he hides. If you say to him directly, it's bath time, he freaks out then hides.

Get a female lab, they're smaller and more manageable. I was in the USAF to TDY = Temporary Duty over Yonder.

If LulaBelle is in my way. I ask "Want a bath?" she quickly gets at least 15 feet away. She loves to be toweled dry, it's like a bullfight game.

Maybe they changed the acronym sheet. When I was first a new AF D/W I got a list of acronyms so I would understand messages when the squadron called. TDY was temporary duty away, but then BUFF was 'big ugly flying fellow', which was NOT what my husband and his crew mates called it!

If you maintain control at all times, fine. Too many owners don't. I never let my Lab loose except in the fenced backyard with me or wife watching her. She loves children too much. At 75 pounds she could seriously injure a child just running to greet them.

OK, I'll bite...

I have friends with some space. So I am going to build two kennels. You come by once a week. In one kennel I am going to switch out labradors, retrievers, poodles etc. in the other I am going to switch out pit bulls.

Each week you have to enter one of the kennels.

You won't know who the owners were, you don't know how they have been trained. You may have to fight the dogs for your life, you may not.

Which kennel will you go into week after week? Others or Pit Bulls?

How about you make a list for us of what dogs you are hoping are in the "others" kennel?

The point of a lot of people on this forum are making is that there are a lot of breeds who not only are not vicous, but if even trained to be vicious could not do the damage pit bulls do.

Now guns don't think, they aren't mobile, they don't have thirst or hunger. They don't breed, they can't smell, see or hear. So I don't think anyone is a hypocrite for wanting to ban one and not the other.

And finally, for your grasp on statistics, if we put a pit bull in every home that also has a gun, do you think the statistics on which injures maims and kills more might change? They most certainly would and I am afraid the pit bull would lose.

I've been there. THIS time, I looked up their description/info on the pitbulls. LOL. According to that site, they make good pets.

I was just hoping someone had a general idea on whether or not they are in the 'vicious' dog category, like pits are.

Yep you got the last word in BUFF wrong. I was in SAC stationed at McConnell in the early 70's. We were a Titan II ICBM and KC135 wing. I was a communications repair technician. We maintained the Launch Alert System for 18 missile sites and the base command post. Dull. Got out after 4.

I agree. Pit bulls belong in a pitt, sprinkled with a little rigor mortis and a whole lot of dirt.

Even when Lula is dry I can hold a towel like a bull fighter and she will walk into it face first.

Kind of like 'reformed' child molesters. Who wants to take a chance with their kids?

or with other people's kids...

It's all about responsible ownership, most dogs are predators by nature, they should be treated as such.

A disciplined dog is a happy dog, dogs are pack animals and they have to be shown who the leader of the pack is. Bella will do tricks til she passes out just make me happy, she wags her tail so hard when I come home it often smacks her in the face (she has neither tail nor ears cropped). I don't doubt there are some bad APBTs out there, but it's the fault of the owner/breeder. I love my dog and hate to see her get a bad rap.

That reminds me of a great scene from "The Big Lebowski"...

DUDE: You brought a f**ing Pomeranian bowling?

WALTER: What do you mean "brought it bowling"? I didn't rent it shoes. I'm not
buying it a f**ing beer. He's not
gonna take your f**ing turn, Dude.
