Terri Schiavo's widower has gone into hiding because of the furore over his wife's death and has sought police protection.
Michael Schiavo, 41, is under guard three days after his disabled wife died from dehydration at a Florida hospice.
She had spent 13 days without food or water after a United States judge upheld Mr Schiavo's claim that she would not have wished to continue life in a persistently vegetative state.
"His goal is to find safe housing because of these death threats," said a friend, Alan Shoopak. "It's not over. Unfortunately, it's just beginning."
Mrs Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, who went to the US Supreme Court to block the removal of their daughter's feeding tube, admit that they care little for their son-in-law, but have urged against revenge attacks.
"Our family abhors any violence, or any threats of violence. We ask that all those who support our family be completely kind in their words and deeds towards others," said Mrs Schiavo's sister, Suzanne Vitadamo.
Anger at Mr Schiavo's actions has been fuelled by the revelation that a court order from a county judge, George Greer, who repeatedly refused the Schindlers' pleas to let their daughter live, will allow him to have her cremated and her ashes interred in Pennsylvania. The Schindlers' request for a share of the ashes or even a lock of their daughter's hair has also been refused.
The family see it as the final act in a 12-year campaign of spite by their son-in-law. Other alleged snubs include having his wife's wedding ring melted down to make a ring for himself.
Last week, while his wife's life ebbed away at the Woodside Hospice in Pinellas Park, Florida, Mr Schiavo moved into quarters on site, to avoid protesters outside. Some had banners expressing vitriol for Mr Schiavo and Judge Greer. "You are going to hell, murderers," one read. The hospice also received hoax bomb threats last week.
For several days, Mr Schiavo has not returned to the home in Clearwater he shares with his fiancée, Jodi Centonze, and their two children. Friends speculate that they may leave Florida altogether.
The results of a post-mortem examination, which it is believed may shed more light on years-old bone fractures Mrs Schiavo suffered, and the extent of her brain damage, will be published within weeks.
Mr Schiavo's friends and family speak of a man who honoured his wife's wishes and released her from what he perceived to be a life without hope. After cradling her in his arms as she died on Thursday morning, he placed a rose in her hand and kissed her goodbye.
A Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday.

The COWARDLY MS will not leave Florida. The Schindlers should. I wouldn't blame the Schindlers if they left the country.
If there is a legal living will, if there is agreement that they are PVS, if their is agreement amongst all the family regarding their wishes...that would be one thing (actually, three things). I still do not agree with it, but would not fight it like this. But in this case you had none of those things. A judge ruled, in the absence of clear, unimpeachable, beyond a reasonable doubt evidence, on two of those things...and then it was backed up by appeals courts all the way up the line, ignoring the legislative and executive branches at every turn. That is the travesty.
They forced euthenasia on this woman and that something we must, IMHO, stand four square against recoil from.
I hate how so many refer to Terri's poor mental state, without mentioning for all those years she was denied therapy.
I hope no one gives this scum what he knows that he deserves. He, like O.J. Simpleton, forever will be thinking that around the next corner is someone that thinks they deserve to pay and wants to accommodate them both.
Well, here we are up to 327. I haven't tried to read all the comments since I posted, but I would differentiate between angry comments in a forum and real death threats.
I don't think it's proper to say anything publicly that can be construed as a death threat, but it's a free country and others may have wider ideas about free speech than I do.
What strikes me, however, is that the "clinton haters" in FR are FAR more moderate than the "Bush haters" in DU, yet it always seems to be the liberals who complain about death threats. They spew out hate for years, and then are outraged if anyone answers them back. The public media and book publishers have issued numerous suggestions that Bush would be better off dead, yet he hasn't complained about it. Clinton used to have people arrested for 24 hours just for looking at him crosseyed.
I just can't work up much sympathy for Michael Schiavo, after he has brutally mistreated his wife for many years and then effectively murdered her. And possibly put her in the hospital in the first place. We may never know, since he has now succeeded in destroying the evidence.
Well let's send him a stuffed animal and some soothing music so he can look beautiful and feel euphoric when he goes. /s

I understand your point. However, Paul did spend five years proving to himself, God and the Apostles that he was serious in his conversion before he began fighting the good fight. Probably a hallmark of justice for Terri and her family would be for the now 'widower' to ask for forgiveness for his role in killing her.

NOT TRUE. Terri's girlfriend testified about what Terri told her, the judge dismissed that testimony, claiming that at the time of the event Terri was referring to (another woman having the tubes pulled) occurred when Terri was 12 years old, so the friend couldn't have been telling the truth.
Years later the judge admitted he was WRONG, but still didn't allow in the testimony.
There was NO clear and convincing evidence of Terri's wishes.
I suspect that she may be suffering from Stockholm syndrome. I think Michael has been manipulating her all along, maybe urging her to have those kids as a means of exerting more control over her, and possibly abusing her. His is the classic abusive personality, and he's been able to indulge his cruel nature by tormenting a lot of people--Terri, her family, and those of us who supported Terri. Now that Terri's gone, his control over his victims is over, and all he has left is Jodi and those kids. I believe they are in great danger.

I saw someone from her family on TV the other day. They said she was clearly aware that she was dying. They said she had a panic stricken look on her face and her eyes were rapidly moving rom side to side as if she was panicking.
One last rant about this monster , then I'll quit. Why did this man collect millions from a lawsuit against the doctors claiming he was suing for ''lack of physical affection''. I'm assuming that means what I think it does. Word is this man was dating other women before Terri's collaspe, after it and then soon after aquirred a live in girlfriend and two kids. It doesnt seem to me he's been without ''physical affection'' for one second!
