The greatest Pole ever has gone to be with the Lord.

That's arguably true, that Karol Wojtytla was the greatest Pole ever. Of course, you have to argue past Jan Sobieski, who led the defense of Vienna against Kara Mustafa and the Turks in 1683 and so prevented a wholesale Turkish invasion of Europe.

Sobieski is definitely #2. However, JP II was instrumental in saving the world from an even graver threat than the Turks--World Communism.

And Casimir the Great. Chopin. Copernicus. There are a few giants. He may be the tallest among them. Hard to say at this time. History will say one day.
