Just my understanding that the Pope himself requested that people not pray for him to linger when it was his time to go.

There is always that doubt, or seed of a miracle of which we can never be certain to which we must cling. That is why the Pope was such a champion of God-given life. I hold out hope to the end and even beyond. The Lord Jesus is the King of the Universe and hence has the final say in this matter.

I am there with you... I never understood the hatred of either Catholics or Jews. I grew up in the Methodist church. In high school my 2 best friends were each a Catholic and a Jew.

I got a visit from my minister one afternoon who told me in no uncertain terms that I must give up my friendships and only fellowship with other Methodists. I never quite grasped that concept, so I never went back to the Methodist church.

Now I'm a born-again evangelical and I still love my Jewish and Catholic friends. I've even added more to my list. I also love my Methodist friends.

My heart is heavy with the illness and potential loss of Pope John Paul II. I always held him in high regard. He had some major struggles within the church and by his actions, I knew he always consulted the Lord for guidance and answers.

My heartfelt sympathies to all of you who mourn.

Perhaps this person is being led to pray because although his time is near it isn't quite here yet?

I've had a lot of experience with witnessing to and practicing apologetics with Roman Catholics, and one thing that has to be done is to get pass the language and terminology barrier.

As Protestants, we use terms that are similar by carry different meanings, as in the case of "praying to saints". When a RC says they are "praying", they don't mean they are offering prayer as we think of prayer, being the sweet aroma of incense wafting up to our God but to them a prayer to a saint or Mary is a means of communication to ask for intercession. Personally, I believe the practice is heterodox and has no legitimate Biblical foundation, however, it is a side issue and not one of an essential nature to salvation. Having said that, Roman Catholic soteriology(method of salvation) is an essential issue, and is one that in discussion I generally hold to. All others are side issues.

To learn more about the differences in RC soteriology and biblical salvation, try studying at the following site:

God bless.

The Catholic Church does not teach that all Protestants are going to Hell. It does teach that Protestants who know the Catholic Church is the true Church and are seperated from the Church at the time of death will not be saved from Hell.

Religion never played a part in how I chose my friends either. I wouldn't have cared if the worshipped a turnip. It wasn't a big deal.

My heart is heavy with the illness and potential loss of Pope John Paul II. I always held him in high regard. He had some major struggles within the church and by his actions, I knew he always consulted the Lord for guidance and answers.

Amen.

I appreciate your reply. However you seem to be making the assumption that I am protestant. I am not. Nor am I catholic. I am a Christion. No more. No less.

Obviously I wasn't the only one who saw it that way.... My intent was not to be "name-calling" however, I see that I did come across that way, and for that I apologize. It hit me the wrong way when I initially read your original post about "it not being seemly for the Pope to die on April Fool Day" and when I saw it a second time, I commented..... Please accept my apology, it is obviously a tough time for many....

Dave

Please excuse my last post. I meant for that to be sent by freepmail, and not on this thread. In my clumsiness I clicked the wrong button and would not intend to start any doctrinal discussion on a thread not purposed for such.

My sincerest apologies to all.

Interesting that there is so little (none?) talk of Orthodox Christians. I was baptized Greek Orthodox and raised RC, so forgive me if I look askance at all this rancor between RC and Prot. Let's please calm down, people.
