April 2, 2005 7:25 a.m. PST Update

From Rome CBS Radio News: (rough transcription of update)

The Vatican has been transparent in allowing news media access to information about Pope John Paul II. Pope John Paul II is responsible for the change in how the Vatican views the media.

At this time, Pope John Paul II's condition is unchanged.

His heart and kidneys are failing. The Vatican said that this does not suggest that he is suffering.

He has a compromised state of consciousness, yet he is not in a comatose state.

He drifts in and out of consciousness. One Vatican source said that it appeared that the Pope is resting with his eyes shut.

Pope John Paul II has responded by opening his eyes when spoken to. He has also tried to speak in the past few hours.

An Aide assisted Pope John Paul II in writing a message to his beloved staff gathered in the Papal apartment. The Pope asked them not to be sad for him.

'Serious' Pope has heart failure

Pope John Paul II has suffered a cardiac arrest and is in a grave condition, the Vatican has announced.

The urgent communique came hours after the Pope's health worsened with a high fever caused by an infection.

"Following a urinary tract infection, septic shock and a cardiocirculatory collapse occurred," Vatican spokesman Navarro-Valls said in his statement.

The Pope was also given the last rites - the Catholic sacrament for the sick and dying, the spokesman said.

But he said the pontiff remained "conscious, lucid and tranquil".

The emergency department chief at Rome's Gemelli hospital said on Thursday the Pope would not be taken to hospital for the time being.

Some observers said this suggested it meant he was too weak to be moved at all.

Sombre mood

Small groups of faithful gathered at St Peter's Square in Rome to pray for the Pope's speedy recovery.

However, the mood in the Vatican is sombre, the BBC's David Willey in Rome reports.

Prelates are openly expressing pessimism about the possibility of the Pope ever resuming the guidance of his one billion-strong church, our correspondent says.

The pontiff is being fed through a nasal tube to aid his recovery from throat surgery last month.

The Pope had appeared briefly at the window of his Vatican apartment on Easter Sunday to bless the faithful, but was not able to speak.

It was the first time during his 26-year pontificate that the Pope delegated the main Easter ceremonies to his cardinals.

'Lost weight'

On Thursday afternoon, the Pope's temperature soared to 40 degrees C (104F), Italian media reported.

He developed breathing troubles and has difficulty in swallowing as a result of the progress of Parkinson's Disease, an incurable condition from which he has been suffering for nearly a decade.

Since his throat surgery, he has lost about 19 kg (42 lb), Father Hejmo said, which leaves him more vulnerable to infections.

The Pope's private doctor Renato Buzzetti is in charge of his medical treatment in his private apartment at the Vatican.

So far this year the Pope has had two spells in hospital where he received treatment for breathing problems and underwent an operation on his throat.

St. Patrick's in NYC is beautiful and there is no room for dancing!

Here's my church:

A lousy picture, but a beautiful church. St. John the Baptist, Glandorf, Ohio.

EWTN has been behind in reporting except they reported that Pope John Paul had died and he hadn't.

Fox News just reported the Pope had blood poisining but that was reported on CNN this morning.

CNN has the best reporting as they have had a lot of people being interviewed that know the Pope and have a lot more reporters that have been at the Vatican for years who are reporting including one that was disgusted when wire services said the Pope was dead.

I have kept it on CNN since you told me about what a good job they were doing. I think they have done a good job.

EWTN is now carrying the Rosary for the health of the Holy Father and for the repose of the soul of Terri Schaivo.

Absolutely. Giuliano della Rovere took the name Julius II.

It has been a shock to my system since CNN is never on in this House. I got mad at Fox and turned over and since then I have heard all kinds of interviews. Some of these priests they have interviewed that knew the Pope that have been really funny when relating their experiences with the Pope.

Would like to have someone other than Judy Woodruff though.

The guy on now from Rome is really good -- I have learned more from this man today. I am surprised my TV even turned to CNN.

Looks like we are yin and yang. We do births on holidays an deaths on or around "government" days. My brother died on April 14th...we think and my brother discovered him on the 15 (which is also the brother that found him and his wife's anniversary) and mom was buried the same day I voted for RWR for his second term and my first spin at voting.

Otherwise, birthdays are Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Christmas, Mother's Day and Father's Day (every now and then and it is a group thing where those that have it on M or F day have it so that it falls the same year...with everyone born in different years...I know, hard to follow) My son has his B-day on MLK day (once in a while) but was due on his Aunt's B-day (V'tine's Day) and my daughter has a "holiday" birthday, too that is of strange significance to the family...

And if you can follow this for my other son, it will make your head spin. My ex-husband and some twin cousins were all born on the exact same day (and have the Father's day thing every now and again). ONe of the twin cousin's wife and I gave birth the exact same day and gave our sons nearly identical names Nicholas Ryan Jones and Nicholas Bryan Jones...but neither knew of the other cousin's name plans and we didn't decide on Ryan for a middle name until I was in the hospital in labor...

I agree, this coverage has been really good and it is extremely interesting. I kind of feel embarrassed after saying that I would never watch CNN again.

It just struck me that no one has even bothered checking/posting about MSNBC's coverage. Ha!

There is something to be said for having local correspondents who know the lay of the land rather than parachuting in a Laurie Dew.

Then it may have been Italian...I recognized it and I am surprised you still hear mass in Latin...maybe it is the accent, but I heard it and knew what was being said and wanted a muzzle put on the person translating.

Kate

Then again, I heard multiple languages as a small child and remembered what most meant even if I could only speak a little of each of most.

I am best in Spanish, English, French, German and Polish in that order and can vaguely understand Latin, Italian and Russian. I actually think in pictures first if I am upset or stressed out.

JPII's life is definitely one to celebrate,
but the selfishness in me, just dreads to see him go.

If you can find why they pick names......let me know.

Because, beginning with Peter, adopting a new name is a way of declaring publicly that you've begun a new life. Many religious take a new name with their vows. Even in the secular world, soldiers have been known to take a nom de guerre. A specifically Roman example would be Octavian, who took the name Augustus. The popes inherited much from the emperors, including some of their civil responsibiliites (thus the title of pontifex maximus). So taking a new name underscores both the romanitas of the popes, as well as their Christianity.
