It is just possible, contrary to my original thoughts, that the tragic Schiavo case will not usher in a slippery slope toward euthanasia but cause a double-barreled backlash against both the "Culture of Death" and judicial activism.
To be sure, the legal precedent established in this case, at least in Florida, represents an affirmative devaluation of human life and opens the door to further troubling scenarios, involving the state-sanctioned murder of the inconvenient, based on "quality of life" assessments.
But I sense in this nation a growing outrage at the arrogance and unaccountability of our judiciary, and at the cavalier attitude many are exhibiting toward life.

And my answer is, we withdraw all medical treatment and sustenance intended to prolong life under those circumstances IF AND ONLY IF that is the express, written will of the patient. If there is no written instruction, then the presumption should be that the person wishes to live.
The law is written by legislators, and legislators are elected by the citizenry. Ultimately, responsibility lies with us, the people. Current law in Florida clearly permits cases like Terri Schiavo to occur. To change this, legislators need to fix the law. If they won't then the legislators themselves need to be changed.
I don't define "refusing medical treatment" as "suicide". Do you?
The fact is that most people want to live, even if they have to suffer. Suffering is preferable to death for most people. Suffering is not necessarily final and is mixed with much hope, death is mixed with embalming fluid, dirt or ashes.
I heard this guy on O'Reilly tonight saying that the so-called "Culture of Life" needs to take a back seat to the Secular Code of "Compassion". He also said if someone like an alcoholic wanted "the hot shot" that he should be medicated, and then if he still wanted it, then that would be ok.
Lacking information you must concluded that the person would want to live because that is the natural way humans are programed.
They didn't have the true information. Do not let the polls discourage you. First, we are the silent majority, and second, we need to raise the conciousness of those who are misled.
NOBODY talked about this at work, but I have sensed it was on people's hearts. Today I was in another office and someone called out "Terri Schiavo Died", and I heard a collective "Ohhhhh!" and I knew everyone was deflated.
If we become a husk or a shell of our former glory, we can fall fast, like the Soviet Union or the Roman Empire.
Look -- I was assigned the soon-to-die status myself long ago and put in wards with others in similar condition. If they decided to die -- to give up, that they had lived long enough -- they did. Including at least one I realky came to appreciate and always encouraged to live. He had run away from home at eleven and joined the circus. Lived an interesting and vibrant life. Had children and grandchildren who loved him.
He was working at an inner-city liquor store one Saturday night and got involved in a shotgun fight. But he could have lived!
Bingo.
I had no idea, my fault maybe, that Judge Greer was elected. What there any sort of campaign to get him off the bench? We had at least three years to do something about this. We did nothing until the last minute when we did try but far to late.
Tom Delay promised a serious response of some kind to Judge Greer. It has yet to materialize.
I have been living a nightmare of horror with the tragedy of poor little Terri Schiavo, helpless as she slipped into eternity. She died a living sacrifice to the Culture of Death. I had in my mind one big metaphore with visions of aliens, comet-ridden motherships and Pope John Paul II on his death bed.
I think that vision; that picture of the entire liberal world on its death bed with hallucinations of alien space ships is how I picture the horror they were willing to allow a precious human being to suffer. The liberal bastion of moral degeneracy put their trust in a comet that could have been called Hale-Bop. Months ago it as John Kerry. Now they follow the cult of death just as the 25 adherents of Heaven's Gate thought they had found the "Higher Source," so too are the millions (I don't care what the exact count) who are willing to take a walk out to the Santa Monica pier and catch a ride into space. I see them in my dreams--nightmare dreams--with everyone dressed identically in black long-sleeved shirts and black sweat pants, and with new black-and-white Nike tennis shoes. On their left shirtsleeves I watched in horror as they placed armband patches on which the words "Heaven's Gate Away Team" were stitched—possibly a reference to the television program Star Trek: The Next Generation on which a small crew called the "away team" went off on planetary ventures. My nightmare continued as I watch a nation intoxicated with the seduction of Marxism, join the membership of Heaven's Gate, each packing their identical bags: a small overnight bag with clothing, lip balm, and spiral notebooks. And like automatons, they placed these bags at the foot end of their beds, put three quarters and a five-dollar bill into their shirt pocket (a habit they developed so whenever they went out they would always have cab fare or change for the phone) and, to my disbelief, drank a small cup of grape juice. The Nike slogan was "just do it," which could explain why they all wore Nike shoes as all became still. My nightmare ended as, In lockstep they all stopped breathing, and like lemmings, they all slipped into eternity.
The above is my statement about the persistent vegetative state of the liberal left in this country. The nation, thankfully, has woken up to the ilk of Michael Moore, Ward Churchill, Teddy Kennedy, Howard Dean, John Kerry, Barbara Boxer and Hilary Clinton. The list goes on. New on the list are Judge George Greer, George Felos, and Michael Schiavo. Also are those millions who give their acceptance to euthanasia in all its forms. However much we have wakened to them we have a long way to go before a nation will not stomach anymore their abortions, euthanasia, homo marriages, and their hatred of Biblical values. The liberal left, you see, are the Culture of Death and, as such, are on a flaming liberal collision course to self-destruction. I was so happy to wake up on time and I see people every day waking up with me.
So you would impose medical treatment on those who do not want it? Should cancer patients be required to undergo chemotherapy? Should heart patients be required to undergo surgery? What about the risks and side-effects of treatment? At what point does "duration of life" supersede "quality of life" as a value? And why should the government or doctors be making those decisions for people?
He was first elected county circuit court judge in 1992, and was reelected in 1998 and 2004. He has said he will retire when his current term expires.
Apparently, when he ran for reelection last year, this case was not on the front burner for most people.
"Ah, it was long past time for Terri to pass from this earth. Yes, her death should be mourned, but we also must recognize that sometimes death is a blessing.
For someone in her condition, I believe it was a blessing..."
Blessings are conferred by God not legal jujitzu by mortals with death agendas. I've seen no evidence by Terri that she wanted to die by starvation. God save your soul.
You get the same question I ask all people who express this sort of sentiment. Maybe you will have the courage to answer it.
And what if you are wrong?
Truly sad. So many chances have been lost.
