A professor at a Bible college near Scranton, Pa., was arrested Tuesday as he tried to storm into the hospice caring for Terri Schiavo.
Dow Pursley, 56, was zapped with a Taser stun gun and tackled to the ground by officers before he reached the door, Pinellas Park police said. He became the 47th protester arrested.
Pursley, who is on the faculty of the Baptist Bible College & Seminary in Clarks Summit, Pa., had two bottles of water with him, police said. He was charged with attempted burglary and resisting arrest.
Baptist Bible College officials said in a written statement that Pursley was not acting on the school's behalf and had traveled to Florida on his personal time.
"He is a dedicated man with strong beliefs and God-given convictions," the statement said.
Pursley is the clinical director of counseling programs for the theological college's graduate school. He also helps oversee a campus clinic that offers psychological counseling based on biblical teaching.
Baptist Bible College spokesman Mark Robbins said that while the college "believes in the sanctity of life," it has not taken an official position on the Schiavo case.
Doctors said that Schiavo, 41, would probably die within a week or two after the tube was removed on March 18. She suffered catastrophic brain damage in 1990 when her heart stopped for several minutes because of a chemical imbalance.
I'm confused, what moral dereliction? The Florida Catholic Bishops have issued a public statement condeming Terri Schiavo's killing from pillar to post, and so has the Vatican. In fact in a very rare circumstance, the Vatican actually named Terri Schiavo in their condemnation of the growing phenomenon of euthenasia in America.
btw, I haven't seen any cavalry headed by Billy Graham, Jerry Falwell or James Dobson heading for Pinellas County lately. Where the hell are they?
I have not directed ANY personal attacks at you nor have I cherrypicked your posts looking for a fight. What is the basic problem that you are experiencing now?
The position that the Catholic priests should intervene in a more dramatic visible way and also urge Governor Jeb Bush to assert the constitutional duties of the governor of Florida is one that makes sense. The issue regarding whatever it is that goes on between the Vatican and the conference of bishops in the US is not one of public record.
Whaht about the Beaitiutdes?
Will god care about him being arrested and a criminal record because he was trying to help someone in need. You are off base.
And I don't like the insulting condensending "son" you choose to address me with.
Look in Breaking News, and you'd see exactly where Jerry Falwell is... Just an FYI
As opposed to the insulting and condescending "Well, boy...I'll be civil if you will."??
...and worst of all they don't put sugar in their cornbread! :op
We also don't make love standing up - can't have people thinkin' that we're dancing.
Hmmm, Wonder how my spell check missed that.
And we don't put in on our grits either.
A Taser Gun??? Some bum died in Chicago because the police used a taser gun on him. The leftist media went absolutely nuts with the story... "Police Taser Kills Man" was the headline in the newspapers.
The guy who died from the taser gun in Chicago was a worthless bum, yet the media attacked the cops. There is a new crusade against taser gun in the media. Yet this man who wanted to give Terri Shiavo water gets shocked and the media mentions it in passing.
If nothing else it shows what disgusting vermin the media and the individuals who were "chosen" to protect the hospital from protestors.
The liberal press selectively chooses its stories and this is once again another example of ridiculous bias. And the police "protecting" the hospital should be ashamed of themselves. Tasering an unarmed man is really BIG of these officers..
Oh wait!
He was armed............
with a glass of water. < /sarcasm>
As a p*$$-poor retiree, I'm wondering if it's true that Texas Gov. Bush (now U. S. President Bush) ever signed into law a bill that allows doctors/hospitals to pull the plug(s) on patients who can't afford to pay for such luxuries as feeding tubes, life-support, etc.? I read, somewhere, that he did. Doubt if it was at this website though.
This is not about the law, didn,t you know?
This is all about Terri and Terry.
I see no point in debating the matter further. The books Goodbye, Good Men and Amchurch Comes Out document these matters. The Florida cases stand for themselves. There is nothing particularly revolutionary or new in calling attention to the clergy subcultures in South Beach, Key West, or Miami. These are actually cliches in the relevant circles involved.
Photos of famous "police officers acting within the law" from history:
Oops! Sorry about that. Blame it on the fact that I should have been in bed at least 3 or 4 hours ago.
You certainly never read about a law that allowed a husband to kill his wife by starvation though, did you?
Good night all.
If he's in Pinellas County, all I can say is it's about time.
