Drudge is describing this on his website as an "aftershock."

At 8.5, that's some aftershock! He also says on his website that there are already panics and blackouts on Sumatra.

Ironically, I was reading about that part of the world last night relative to the Japanese naval action there in WW2 (during April of 1942). This was a couple of months before the Japanese lost most of their aircraft carriers at Midway and at that time, it looked like the Japanese were going to control the entire Indian Ocean. I often wonder how differently the war would have turned out if not for Midway.

I've read a lot about Midway. Shows how much intelligence gathering matters.

I'm always astounded when I realize that the Battle of Midway took place within 6 months of the attack on Pearl Harbor, but it STILL took almost four years to finally defeat the Japanese! They had gotten themselves SO entrenched in the lands around the Pacific.

I used to watch a lot of old WWII movies with my Daddy when I was growing up, and wondered why the 'Coast Watchers' were always Australian. It wasn't until many years later, when looking at a globe, that I realized just how close the Japanese were to being able to attack Australia from the places on which they'd already established a presence! THEN I understood why the Aussies were so concerned about it!
