Where does the July 16 date come from? Is it based on this study? http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/99/26/16562

One of my college roommates is from South Korea. I have heard the word kimchee bantered about, but don't know exactly what it is or if he has it in the room or not...

You seriously suggesting that Strategerist should be killed in a tsunami?

Wow. You make the shari'a following, amputation-loving islamofacists sound quite liberal don't you?

Shouldn't we just put him in an orange jum suit and slice through his throat with a kitchen knife?

Allahu Akbar!

That's why we have the kooks here to tell us which Christian holiday is going to trigger that third quake.

Heinlein had them figured out:

"The most preposterous notion that H. Sapiens has ever dreamed up is that the Lord God of Creation, Shaper and Ruler of all the Universes, wants the saccharine adoration of His creatures, can be swayed by their prayers, and becomes petulant if He does not receive this flattery. Yet this absurd fantasy, without a shred of evidence to bolster it, pays all the expenses of the oldest, largest, and least productive industry in all history." -- Lazarus Long (Robert A. Heinlein)

[People have such an emotional hatred of the concept of randomness]

If this were true, then why do so many people gamble?

Because they believe in something called "luck" that will allow *them* to beat the inexorable randomness. Oddly enough, such people win/lose at the same rate as everyone else.

Why dont you guys take your spat off-line. Please.

Why doesn't’t the administrator “WARN” him like I was? I sent an abuse alert. Nothing so far, instead I see a poster making a moral equivalence between the rights of free speech to being a JERK. Well, Administrator I am waiting.

Pentecost, Pentecost is the day to look out for. When the Holy Spirit comes in Tongues of Fire and Great Glory!

Could it be the End of Days? Come Lord Jesus, Quickly Come.

Certainly someone as self-righteous as yourself wouldn't be among them?

More classic projection. There's nobody more self-righteous than those suggesting that disasters happening to other's is some sort of divine punishment.

"luck" is the simple fool's "randomness" both are beliefs in effects without causes. If people thought a fix were in, nobody would play the lottery. Even though the fix would not reduce their probability of winning, it would just reduce their take.

Just go talk to your local Police/Fire/EMS/Hospital people. Things go bonkers on full moons.

Just as in the supposed lunar phase/earthquake supposition, studies I've seen show there is no demonstrated relationship between full moons and crime/physical violence.

There are seasonal variations however! It's documented for example that there is more family violence during the Thanksgiving - New Year period than in any other similar length period during the year.

Hmm....haven't even heard of the Wasatch front.

The problem is European settlement in the area has been for a microscopic period of time..150 years. And even before then the Indian population was tiny and scattered.

However, the Wasatch Mountains got there by thousands of approximately magnitude 7 earthquakes...however, there hasn't been a really large quake on the Wasatch front since the Mormon settlement.

People spend so much time talking about stuff that has virtually no chance of happening in anyone's lifetime (Yellowstone having a caldera blast, the supposed collapse tsunami wiping out the East Coast) and not nearly enough talking about really bad stuff that's LIKELY to happen in our lifetimes (Like 5,000+ people being killed in Salt Lake City, built on soft lake mud, and 100 billion + dollars in damage.)
