Dozens Reported Dead in Indonesia After Quake

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A massive earthquake killed dozens of people and destroyed hundreds of homes in the main town on Indonesia's Nias island Monday evening, a local government official told Metro TV.

"I can guarantee that dozens have died," Agus Mendrofa, the deputy mayor of Gunungsitoli town, said.

A little tidbit you'll appreciate:

The tsunami in December deposited 40 million tons of titanium nodules on the Indian coast.

I'm surprised it took three hours before we had any reports of casualties.

It's not ABSOLUTELY precise.

But three days on either side of a Full moon is 7 days (including the day itself)...add that to a New Moon, and 14 days each lunar cycle are within three days of a Full or New Moon.

I stand horribly guilty of saying 50% when I should have said 46.66666666666666666666666666666666666666% of a calendar month is within 3 days of a New or Full Moon.

Titanium noodles are the hot fried kind with bumbu and pepper sauce.

You know, I've watched them building high rise condos in BKK ... they pour a floor, stick in some rebar to make load bearing columns, then pour another floor, repeat. Personally, I would not want to be in such as structure in an earthquake. I know, I know, we even have buildings getting built that way now in the US, but I guess I am just a good old, steel girder kind of guy. Not to freak you out or anything! ;) ....

I'm not; these are obscure areas with no foreign media whatsoever, despite being pretty densely populated.

Do titanium nodules float? Titanium is a relatively lightweight metal. Perhaps if the nodules were loosely sintered and porous they would float like pumice.

I'm surprised the "God's Punishment" types haven't commented on this quake being centered near an island (Nias) with hundreds of thousands of Protestant Christians.
