Police 'Showdown' Averted ['Team of State Agents Were En Route to Seize Terri']
Miami Herald ^ | Sat, Mar. 26, 2005 | CAROL MARBIN MILLER

Posted on 03/25/2005 7:55:28 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.

Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.

For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''

In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.

''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.

''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''

The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

We've heard that the initial cause of Terri's heart failure was lack of potassium

"I think if the poll were taken after people saw pictures of how Terri is now, the results would be different. Don't you? Nevertheless, it is true that there are too many meatheads who are more concerned with the latest game from Sony than a poor woman being cruelly terminated by the state."

I agree. And also, the media has totally distorted the facts of this case and I know that accounts in part for the high number, but that even a small number of people in this country see nothing wrong with what is happening here is very disturbing. This is barbaric, and when I look at the pictures on TV of children being handcuffed and arrested for trying to give a drink to a dying woman, I wonder what country is that happening in - it surely can't be my country, but it is and it is just unbelievable.

And, sadly, many people just hear the soundbites and think, oh well, won't she be better off dead anyway? Frightening.

We may not respect 'em, but we sure do elect 'em.

I appreciate your honest approach, and would just warn you to be careful..that's not a popular opinion with the mob.

Beyond all, I wish Mrs. Schaivo's wishes to be followed. Even if there were suddenly discovered an unimpeachable living will wherein Mrs. Schiavo said she didn't want the tube, I'm sure that many of the Schindler fanatics wouldn't care...they'd want to keep her body going anyway. :-(

Now that our U.S. Supreme Court is placing ICC laws over the laws of our out nation,
and now that it's deemed okay to take action that will kill a defenseless woman, I'd like
to suggest a replacement for the current Supreme Court building.

This would be my first suggestion.

I believe that opinion was written BEFORE the order from Greer.

I hope so, but don't believe so.

Greer has the sheriffs there watching for anyone whose going to try to save her.

Execution by judiciary, supported by the appellate courts who don't see any "legal error".

The judiciary itself is a legal error, as it has usurped powers of the other branches.

I don't think impeachment would be do-able - and certainly not in time for Terri. The fact seems to be that the congress, Governor and President got out-powered by a pissant district court judge. This person may be appointed (not elected as ous are in WA State) IF elected though, the people can show their displeasure in due time. I am saddened that no strong men/women were able do what is right either - just taking Terri out of the death camp. We must get out from under these lawyers and judges and take back our self-reliant, cooperative country.

Here's something just up on Newsmax. It says Jeb would have the authority to act in a criminal investigation.

Certainly not everyone thinks Jeb did all he could.

If Jeb wants to sit back and wring his hands.....fine. He shouldn't have done his huffing and puffing press conference.

Just saw a replay of his interview on Fox.....he was so distraught that people actually thought he was going to DO something. It's so unfair! He told that mean media from the beginning that he only does things he thinks are legal. It was that wacky DCFS that gave everyone the wrong impression!

He's owned by Greer now....always will be. Governor in name only.....GINO

At this point, I think he can only redeem himself by showing up there personally.

That would be quite a scene, if Jeb himself walked in with a cup of ice chips. What to do, what to do?
