Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.
Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.
For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''
In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.
''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.
''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''
The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

If you are going to have an opinin, at least find out the truth before you start spouting lies. She had therapy for years up until maybe six months after the malpractice award came in. The thalmic implants cost $100,000 and were hoped to bring her back. She had daily theraphy overseen jointly by her husband and parents for three or four years minimum and she showed NO improvment. Granted she hasnt had any therapy recently but then the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result.
Were you going to have congress cite her for failure to appear if you are so quick to want congress to sight for not making her available?
And I dust my feet of you.
People keep posting that the sheriff, cops, et al., do not work for the Governor. Obviously they all work for the judiciary. The judiciary can defy an order from the Governor, but the Governor cannot defy an order from the judiciary. The entire situation is upside down.
Emphasis on the word yet. However, I wasn't necessarily refering to you specifically.
Two things - 1, they were processed and released to their mother immediately, so they are not "hostages", so maybe histrionics are not called for with regard to that? Just a thought. 2, from reports that are coming out, they, along with their father told the police ahead of time what they were going to do, and they did it with EMPTY CUPS. IT was symbolic, i.e. a media ploy. Nothing more.
Really? Never, in the history of Protestantism has a person ever been kicked out of a Baptist church? Really? That's a mighty big claim - got documentation to back that up?
Since "they" don't do that, this is pretty serious stuff.
From what I saw, the pastor was more worried about how his presence in the church was a distration that they didn't need. Woo. Serious, indeed.
The court did not order anyone's death. If Mrs. Schiavo were to suddenly become concious and be able to grab a burger, the court is not ordering she be bludgeoned or have it ripped away. You spew out words to obscure the truth, not illuminate it.
But the basic truth you will not admit to is that she could never ask for a burger. Her brain is gone, except for some lower functions. Mr. Schiavo had hope for years, with therapy and experimental treatments, but eventually realized it was futile.
In fact, many people would want their spouses to act like Mr. Schiavo did... Try for treatment, but let them go when it becomes clear there's no hope. That's why mainstream America is so against the attempted theft of Mrs. Schiavo's rights.
Uh, "MS" and "TS" are the same side. The Schindlers (the opposing side) are Robert and Mary...and I take it "MS" was meant to be Michael Schiavo, not Mary Schindler.
I'm on the side of Life, but I'm ALSO on the side of truth, and rational thinking, rather than emotional-driven hysteria, why do you ask?
"This from the state that ley John Couey run around free."
Unfortunately, it's not just a Florida thing..... The John Coueys and Felos/Greers are in every state.
Judge Greer just ruled against Terri. What a Nazi. He made Terri's parents wait all night. He knew then he was not going to rule in favor of Terri. What a Nazi.
