Bordering on vigilantism

The Minuteman Project mistakes the nature of our immigration problem

It will be fascinating to see how the Minuteman Project, the brainstorm of Aliso Viejo resident James Gilchrist, comes off now that President Bush has referred to the effort as a "vigilante" operation of which he disapproves. It has certainly stirred a lot of interest, pro and con.

I think we could annex Mexico, convert them to Americans and live happy ever after.

How many new Democrat Senators shall we give them? With over 100 million people they ought to qualify for about 140 Representatives in the House.

Despite the many people who tell us that the Mexican people are natural conservatives and can be converted to the Republican party, the most popular politician in Mexico right now is the Mayor of Mexico City. He'll likely be their next Presidente. He is a flaming leftest. It remains to be seen if after election he will behave moderately like Lula in Brazil or radically like Chavez in Venezuela.

But I know for certain that I want nothing to do with Mexican politics, their socialism or their endemic corruption as part of America.

Why is the President in favor of legal status for illegals? That's one point I've missed over the years and I don't understand it.

He wants an unlimited supply of cheap, subsidized by the taxpayer, labor for his rich, elite buddies. If this labor happens to be illegal it gives us lots to complain about.

If he can redefine all the illegals as legals and open the borders to an unlimited number more he can just shrug his shoulders and just say these are good honest hardworking people and we have nothing to complain about.

But none of the problems go away. We still have overburdened schools that are failing because of English as a second language students and failing hospital with an abundance of poor uninsured patients demanding free care and driving up our insurance rates. Making them legal does not make these problems go away. Business gets a huge cheap labor subsidy. By making them legal his rich friends have lots of poor labor to exploit and we just look like heartless racists when we complain.

Hope the effort did not tax your limited assets too severely

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that Mr. Spodefly's response to your abusive post was sarcastic.

You are trying to start trouble. Stop it.

I've heard him questioned on this in interviews. He seems to mumble something about "these are only hard working people trying to earn a living for their families". He seems oblivious to the fact that when you open the gate, not everyone coming thru are hard working people looking for work. He seems to be as "brain dead" to the national security issues as clinton and carter.

And my reply was not sarcastic?

You know, if they declared a moratorium on sarcasm on Free Republic it would cut posts by 90%.

But what I was getting at is these immigration threads don't seem to be a good place to start up flame wars because there could be some other more productive discussions going on when the thread is pulled by the moderators.

Yes. Even if 90% of them were perfectly honest, that wouldn't be good enough. A small percentage of hardcore crooks can ruin a country. And Mexico has plenty of those.

"Why is the President in favor of legal status for illegals? That's one point I've missed over the years and I don't understand it."

This question always tickles me;
I would invite any Texas FReepers to provide me with some means by which a Texas politician could be elected Governor without working hard to collect mexican votes and the support of the mexican mayors, sheriffs, and business persons that make up a huge percent of the state's population.

I honestly think GWB is virtually crippled in this one issue because he can't go against his historic supporters despite being fairly advised by this time that something MUST be done.

Of course, by dithering around and doing nothing to defend us from a real and present threat he can only make the situation worse for himself and for us all.

None of the management of FR are racists, and they kick out any racists that make themselves known. Furthermore, Jim has the 1st Amendment right of free association and does not need to have his right vetted and analyzed and critiqued and questioned, or his motivations impugned, by you or anyone else.

Who do you hate most? The mexicans, Bush, or Jim Robinson?

It isn't about hate, it's about how we deal with evil.

I think the best way is to avoid it, to shun it. Starting a manufacturing plant in a corrupt country, whether it is Mexico or China is a mistake because it makes you dependent on them, you are liable to economic blackmail by them, and you eventually become one of them.

If so, I would give it five minutes before a new thread was started. It is an issue that (along with Judges) will be front and center in the months and probably years to come.

Arnold Schwarzenegger won the election in California even though Gray Davis was in the pocket of all those groups.

Yes, I am aware of it.

Congress had to go behind Bush's back to get it done.

Just figuring how to best annex Mexico is all.

I for a long time would not let them be more than a state.
