Why is the President in favor of legal status for illegals? That's one point I've missed over the years and I don't understand it.

I've heard him questioned on this in interviews. He seems to mumble something about "these are only hard working people trying to earn a living for their families". He seems oblivious to the fact that when you open the gate, not everyone coming thru are hard working people looking for work. He seems to be as "brain dead" to the national security issues as clinton and carter.

Yes. Even if 90% of them were perfectly honest, that wouldn't be good enough. A small percentage of hardcore crooks can ruin a country. And Mexico has plenty of those.

This question always tickles me;
I would invite any Texas FReepers to provide me with some means by which a Texas politician could be elected Governor without working hard to collect mexican votes and the support of the mexican mayors, sheriffs, and business persons that make up a huge percent of the state's population.

I honestly think GWB is virtually crippled in this one issue because he can't go against his historic supporters despite being fairly advised by this time that something MUST be done.

Of course, by dithering around and doing nothing to defend us from a real and present threat he can only make the situation worse for himself and for us all.
