The Right to Life
National Review Online ^ | March 24, 2005, | William J. Bennett & Brian T. Kennedy

Terry Schiavo is near death. If actions are to be taken to save her life, they must be taken now.

Let us briefly review the relevant facts: Terri is a human being whose physical condition is in dispute, but perhaps not for long. She is the daughter of loving parents, and she has a brother and sister. She is the wife of a man who once loved her, may still love her, but has taken a new woman and has with her two children. It is his duty under Florida law, and by common sense, to be her guardian.

Florida courts have found that she is incapacitated and beyond repair. Doctors have voted three to two that she is in a "persistent vegetative state." Her husband and legal guardian claims that she would have wished not to be kept alive should she find such a state. The courts agree. Florida law, as interpreted by Florida courts, provides that she should be allowed to expire. It appears Terri Schiavo has no legal right to life.

But does Terri Schiavo have a natural right to life?

I agree with the theoretical premise of this article. However, bringing in state troopers to grab Terri will inevitably lead to innocent bloodshed. Now, one could say that Terri's blood is being shed. But then I would have to say how many others should you be willing to sacrifice to save Terri? Armed action is not the answer.

I think at this point the parents need to spend as much time with Terri and be there for her. I don't think there is anything else anyone else can do but pray for her and her parents.. and hope that the **^&%%so called husband has the decency to let them have some time with her and hand her over to them for burial when the time comes. Unless someone throws in a couple of smoke bombs and clear the place and rescue her .. not much hope. How sad

What is the theoretical premise you refer to? I see no nuanced haze or mystical loftiness in the column, nor is there any reference to a theory or a premise.

If Terri dies, I doubt there will be an opportunity for a burial.

true.. I am sure he is being kept up on her condition or he will hang around and pretend to be the "husband-fufilling her wishes" and have the morgue on speed dial, ready to pick her up the minute she passes and cremate her before the legal battle for her body starts. I would hope their attorneys have that covered.

"I think at this point the parents need to spend as much time with Terri and be there for her."

Why is it the conservative side is always willing to throw in the towel and the left almost never is.
When you hear of civil disobedience with rare exceptions it is the left which is willing to risk jail for their cause.
I was in Boulder, Colorado when they had something like 50,000 or so Promise Keepers meeting in the football stadium.
The thought crossed my mind, that nothing was stopping them from walking out of that stadium and shutting down one of the local late term abortion mills. Yet, I knew that despite the overwhelming opposition to abortion in the gathering the thought never crossed their mind to use their numbers to stop the evil that was being perpetrated within a mile of that stadium.
At this moment all the court efforts have failed and the media including FOX are writing her obituary. I believe before midnight tonight Jeb Bush is going to tell the courts to be dammed and take custody of Terry and save her life.

Whatever the outcome I believe the counter-revolution against Judicial Tyranny has started.

"Why is it the conservative side is always wiling to throw in the towel and the left almost never is" . 1.Reality of the situation . On the other hand, I agree with you and that has been my biggest peeve with the GOP is that they have control (except for the liberal judges) and never act on it. Always worried about how they are perceived and never follow through. The other side does whine ...and loudly and do seem to get things done, where we are the radical religious fanatics . Both Florida Leg and Congress whimped out on it. Conservatives never hold their ground, they barely stir the water and back off. I don't know what the answer. Florida GOV should have barged in pulled her out and worry about the consequences later like the left.

I am not saying I want anymore blood shed over this disaster- BUT Here is another way to look at it. How many people have already paid the ultimate price and shed blood for our freedoms and our way of life- those things which are not being upheld today in America?

Yes, I can almost hear the rallying cry now:

Remember Terri!

Those who would use armed violence to prevent Terri from being saved will be at the moral level of "good Germans" protecting an active concentration camp and deserve to suffer whatever fate befalls them.

There is a reason for their actions not being drawn to violence. Its called upholding your own moral values and not sacrificing them under the pretense of stopping abhorrent acts. If you become what you fight then what is the point? Upholding your beliefs in the face of those you fight is important or those beliefs are just a matter of convenience and of no value to anyone.

Concerned Citizen to General Washington: "but sir, if we offend the King, we shall cause unwanted bloodshed. Can'st we not all get along?"
