Terri's Last Chance

Terri's Last Chance It's time to try giving Terri Schiavo orally administered liquids. by William Anderson 03/23/2005 12:45:00 PM

THE CHIPS ARE DOWN. We have had a surfeit of due process. It is now well past time to consider the facts which process has willfully ignored. There is no reason, medical, moral, or legal, to refrain from an attempt to provide Terri Schiavo with orally administered liquids.

There are only two possible explanations for having employed gastric tube feeding. Either (1) her neurologic damage has brought about a swallowing dysfunction with danger of aspiration pneumonia; or (2) it was simply a matter of convenience to avoid labor intensive hand feeding.

In either case, no medical reason now exists to refuse a trial of natural drinking. She may have impaired swallowing function, but that at its worst cannot be as bad as death by dehydration.

Allowing her to drink water would be the definitive test of swallowing function. She may be able to swallow water and other clear liquids, in which case she will avoid death by dehydration, even if she later succumbs to malnutrition. Or she may be able to swallow pureed food, which will avoid death by malnutrition. Or she may not be able to swallow water without aspiration into the lungs, and so would develop pneumonia, and have a quicker and more peaceful death.

As to legal concerns, a guardian may refuse any medical treatment, but drinking water is not such a procedure. It is not within the power of a guardian to withhold it, and not in the power of a rational court to prohibit it.

The moral case speaks for itself. When we awaken from this queasy nightmare, people will ask how it could have been that a court could post a police officer by the bedside to insure that a dying woman succumbed to a ghastly death by thirst.

William Anderson is a lecturer at Harvard University and Senior Psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

I've heard these rumors for some time now that Mike Schiavo's physical abuse is what possibly led to Terri's downfall.

Is there really any proof out there that Mike Schiavo was an abuser or that he intentionally hurt Terri?

Anyone?

I seriously wonder if the judges, the estranged husband, the hospice stand to gain income on the sale of Terri's organs after she dies. Her family won't know. This blood thirsty husband wants to quickly cremate her remians.

The haste and premeditation of her court ordered murder is astounding and shocking.

I cannot believe that all these judges paid for by the hard work of the American taxpayer, who dress in the finest suits and tailored shirts, who eat when hungry and drink when thirsty, have conspired in such a willful and capricious manner to kill an innocent defenseless handicapped woman based on hearsay.

No MEDICAL reason exists, but a LEGAL one sure does...Judge Greer saw to it.

Honesty, what's the worst that can happen if you should get caught? Grant it, you could be arrested. Loose your job, but a life may be saved by your dereliction of duty. I truly believe that it would be worth the punishment. Surely such an individual would be praised as a hero, not to say that this would be ones motivation to save Terri.

It is disturbing to witness the complacency of those who are in position to take immediate action.

Stipulate the "don't want to live" but where is the evidence that "I want to die like this". If you agree

I do not want to be kept on real artificial support after a reasonable time has been allowed to give me a chance to come out of it - but, by damn, I'm gonna write in my papers - DO NOT STARVE TO DEATH, YOU BAST*RDS

Unfortunately, it will be shot down in 6 hours.

I'm not a lawyer, but that is just my opinion.

All this stuff about "19 judges" etc. is bunk...while judges may have reviewed the original judges conduct with relation to the law, no one other than Greer has looked at the the intimate specifics of the case.

Once again, I am not a lawyer, and this is JMO...

Terri had begun making plans to divorce him, since she had told a coworker and family member.

Then why, oh why, wasn't this "hearsay" given at least as much credence as Michael's hearsay was (re, Terri supposedly telling him to starve her death). She wanted to divorce this SOB -- yet he has been allowed to retain guardianship all these years, even after taking up with and fathering children with another woman?

This is utter madness! How can any reasonable person not understand how wrong this is? The conflicts of interest are so glaring you need sunglasses!

I live in new jersey and cannot right now get down to Florida. but all freepers who live in Florida should at least check out the scene at the hospice. if there are enough people doing this, security can be overwhelmed and just give this poor woman a glass of water. I suggest especially nurses and those with experience in handling the care of disabled people take the lead here. What else can we do?

And when THEY refuse to save her, will Gov Bush do something?

I'm just out here, wandering around in the desert...

Would / Could someone tell me if there's any other news going on about this as of 10:08CST?

On MSNBC, They said earlier that it is only a matter of "poliical calculus" causing Ms. Schiavo's life to be debated.I then saw footage of her smiling when people spoke to her and touched her gently. She is not dead and to kill her will simply open the doors to killing the weak and the meek.

The right to die people are dangerous because they know they never err.
Thinking that one may be wrong, implies a moral code.
People who will fight to the end to starve an innocent helpless woman have no moral code. Therefore these people cannot hear us no matter how we shout:"This is wrong" their internal make up cannot receive that message.

Unfortunately I'm not nearly as close as you are to FL, not to suggest that you should be down there, but I am unable to fly down.

People have tried to deliver water. They were arrested. This does not mean we shouldn't continue peaceful efforts to save her.

For those of us who are unable to be in FL one thing is for certain......we can continue to pray.

Our pleas may fall on deaf ears, but the Lord hears our cries.
Let His will be done. There is hope in Him.

Another factor that occurred to me is that these people, not fearing God or at best possessing a badly warped view of Him, deify the self directed will. Therefore if they pack it away by starving each other to death, hey at least they were "the master of their fate, the captain of their soul" clear up to the brink of this visible shore.

how about ex rays showing damage to her nec consist-ant with strangling?

I'll let you do your own research - I'm tired of repeating.

Someone even posted the actual ex ray results last night - there here on the threads somewhere. (there was also evidence of previous fractures...

That is one of the issues we want investigated before she is killed.
