Mother pleads for Terri Schiavo's life

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Hanging their hopes on a last-minute compromise in Congress, Terri Schiavo's parents notified her hospice to prepare to have her feeding tube reinserted on Sunday, her third day without food or water.
Congressional leaders from both parties hoped an agreement reached on a bill would allow the tube to be restored while federal courts review her case. The House and Senate were expected to take up the legislation by Sunday or early Monday. If passed, President Bush planned to sign it.

But Mary Schindler pleaded for parents nationwide to call their congressional representatives and pressure them to vote for a bill to prolong her daughter's life.
"There are some congressmen that are trying to stop this bill," she said outside her daughter's hospice. "Please don't use my daughter's suffering for your own personal agenda."

Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., issued a statement late Saturday saying he will make an objection that would stop the vote Sunday. Any member can demand that a majority of members be present to do business. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., said he was trying to gather enough votes to defeat the bill Monday

Oh really? I did not see that in the court papers. Get real this is not even on par with this case. The only case I can think of that is remotely on par with this case is Karen Ann Qunilan's case.

I was shocked that Michael's lawyer came out the other day making statements that made him sound like he was representing Terri. Felos is the worst kind of lawyer.
I'm ever amazed by those who bandy about whining over state's rights while continually overlooking the issue of individual rights.
Would you care to share what life support was withdrawn? In the Terri situation we are talking about food and water; not vents, pacemakers, dialysis, etc.
This is how the "Left" will win on the Schiavo case:
1. Although a large majority prefer limitations, severe limitations on abortion, a majority of people prefer personal or family management of incapacitated patients.
2. The file film shown of Mrs. Schiavo do her no favors in representing her position as a proactive individual in her surroundings or to others.
3. The Congress should not have waited until the "11th Hour" to make their position known. It made them look like panderers. The had 15 years since she was in her current state and 11 years since the Republicans took the House. Everybody knows the Dem/Libs are scumbags, nobody expected them to respond, their base is happy.
4. Quite a few people on Mrs. Schiavo's "side" disapprove of her husband behavior and find that distaste part of the argument. It's not. His actions, positive or negative are tangential. People don't know what they would do in that position.
5. The investigation into how Mrs. Schiavo came into her current state most likely has been exhausted. The people of Florida enjoy executions the same way they enjoy Pop-Tarts, early and often, if there was any possible way her husband was involved, it would have become apparent by now.
6. Common sense says, there is a greater probability Mrs. Schiavo WOULD NOT WANT to exist in her current condition. I'm trying to recall the last time I heard somebody mention they would enjoy life attached to a feeding tube.
7. Most people DON'T WANT to be responsible for ending a family member's life. Most people can't handle having a pet "put to sleep". They just stop visiting the family member. Who wants to be the one at the funeral parlor everybody is pointing at.
8. If somebody will kill somebody for a million dollar insurance policy, they'll do it for any other reason. A murderer is a murderer, a martyr is a martyr.
9. No, you don't know how you would react in that position. You think you know how you would like to react. More times it's the parents who are crying on TV wanting their kids back that buried them the night or drowned them the night before than wake from a state such as Mrs. Schiavo.
Also, in the Terri situation, key players like the in name only husband and the actual parents differ in opinion. If the parents agreed with the husband in name only, none of us would be talking about this now!
Newt Gingrich on Fox News just asked the same question that I have had--"Why is this one judge in Florida in such a hurry to kill this woman?" He said that the judge should order the feeding tube re-inserted until the congress either passes a bill or not--
The Constitution doesn't speak of any of those things. It limits the power of government in an attempt to secure those things. You are thinking of the Declaration of Independence--which isn't law.

I do not know the answer to whether she should live or die. If people, including those in this forum, are willing to accept the court's decision that she should die, then inflict it quickly.
Do not starve this function/feeling human being. She has been sentenced to death, do so humanely with an injection as the end result is the same. Also, that way it would be much more obvious to the rest of the country what the court is truly deciding.
Excellent point. Roe v Wade anulled all existing state laws regarding abortion. The trend of the central gov't to usurp state power is ongoing; so the death culture has to play in the playground they have created.
We have in place a very simple law: You can make a legal document that says under what condition you are to be let go.
No document, and we keep you alive as long as it doesn't involve artificial means. Feeding is not an artificial means.
I don't understand what those who want this woman to be starved to death feel is to be gained by this other than that we are merely expanding the right to choose into the post-natal stage.
The pro-choice argument in large part is about "wanted" babies. Now we're talking about "wanted" adults.
The compromise in all this is that legal form. It's available to ANY adult. That they don't get one in their 20's or 30's because "no one does" at that age is the lamest defense in a society where we are expected to make our own life choices--the basis for the pro-starvation folks here.
As you point out, homeless people cannot make decisions for themselves, and are essentially living on public property, we're essentially their next of kin, so I guess we can decide to off them.
Also, as you point out, blind folks are missing one of the senses used for input on what life is all about--a blind person on one level can never fully comprehend what life is, so how can they make a rational decision about whether or not they want to live? They're living an illusion of life, a shred of what life is really about.
Those who are incapacitated and can't move can't get much out of life--they can't hold jobs, can't contribute to society...
The slippery slope argument is incorrectly used in this case: Killing TS isn't about a slippery slope towards killing the unwanted, it IS killing the unwanted, period. We're not heading toward that kind of world; we're living in it.
You trust her "husband" (living with girlfriend & two illegitimate children) who didn't come up with the "she wants to die" theory until SEVEN YEARS AFTER he started the lawsuit and finally got his cash award? He has no written or filmed will relating her wished, we should just rust him? He promised to use the money to give her therapy but reneged on his promise. Now wants her dead STAT, no therapy, no autopsy, no clergy to visit, has kept her medical records closed... I hope when I am sick that I don't have a "friend" like you.
