One book that President Bush has apparently been recommending to fellow readers is Tom Wolfe's "I Am Charlotte Simmons", an R-rated behind-the-scenes look at just how wild today's universities have become. Wolfe details how sex is frequently reduced to heartless hookups and binge drinking, which leads to many risky, almost-anonymous sexual encounters. CBN News checked in with students at several top campuses to see if Wolfe got it right.
Wolfe is known for doing exhaustive research, and for "I Am Charlotte Simmons" he spent many months interviewing students and hanging out on campuses, absorbing the atmosphere.
Students that CBN News talked to admit that Wolfe captured a stark truth: that many college kids throw themselves into soulless sex, a series of meaningless sexual encounters, often fueled by almost killer amounts of alcohol.
Wolfe's book has put a spotlight on what many parents might consider an alarming decadence on many modern American campuses.
Sarah Longwell lectures at dozens of campuses a year, often talking to students about sex. She read Wolfes I am Charlotte Simmons, and said, "If I were a parent and I were reading this, and I had a child either about to go to college or in college, I'd say 'that's it; we're home-schooling you until you're 22.'"
Even though the same kinds of things still go on (and really always have gone on..), it's the attitudes towards them that have changed over the years... things that used to be scandalous in my day, are now either ignored, championed, or pushed on the youth of today.
I think you nailed it.. I'm used to the leftist whackos not getting it..but what scares me are the so-called conservatives who don't get it.. or are turning a blind eye to it... I guess when push comes to shove, one finds out who has moral courage and who can't be counted on.
Reminds me a lot of Nazi Germany actually.... there were those who believed in the Nazi cause, those who sold their friends and loved ones out for profit, and those who were too busy looking after their own priorities to do anything but watch as people were hauled away..
And why would that be? Because intercourse is never involved? But I'm pretty sure it is, at least sometimes.
If you're going to try to tell me that contraception is always used and is 100% effective, I think you're wrong on both counts.
They are pushed, at many secular colleges, by the administration ... my own alma mater passes out condoms to students (I don't mean they're available, I mean they're issued to everyone as standard equipment in a "personal survival pack") and had a quasi-pornographic mandatory "sex ed" program for incoming freshmen, which featured both simulated nudity and raunchy language.
This is feminist ideology in action, trying its best to undermine marriage and ruin girls' (and boys') lives. It's not just college kids acting up. There are feminazi professors out there who call hooking up "revolutionary," supposedly because it teaches girls to use boys as sex objects the same way boys use girls. That's supposed to be "liberating".
I went to college in the late 70's-early 80's; I encountered "hookup" behavior one time in four years (a housemate of mine when I was on co-op brought a girl home from a party once).
Things have changed.
So your sin originates from God's plan for you?
How the media presents parents has NO influence on kids who have good, solid relationships with their own parents. And if those relationships aren't good and solid, then they have reason enough to not respect their parents. While it is true that we are supposed to honor our fathers and mothers, it also says in the bible that parents aren't supposed to drive their kids crazy (I'm paraphrasing here)-- but how often do we hear that verse qhoted?
(It's somewhere in the NT, when I find it again, I'll post the reference. Or, maybe someone here will find it before I do.)
No doubt that Greer has found a hero in Adolf.. I'm sure he's based his whole career strategy on Mein Kampf.
"I believe that God, ever the patient gentleman, in His sovereign wisdom allows each of us to make certain mistakes so that He can teach us from them."
Exactly! I believe it pained Him to let me make my numerous bad judgement calls in my youth, just as it pains any parent to let their children make their own mistakes. The real joy is in watching them learn and grow. I'm sure I still make Him sad sometimes, but I pray that I make Him glad more often than not..
One contributor is the whole Girls Gone Wild culture, the Spring Break parties, etc. Not hard to imagine what is going to happen following jello wreslting. It is also amazing how "cool" it is for two girls to makeout in public.
