PINELLAS PARK, Fla. As Republican lawmakers scramble to pass legislation in an attempt to preserve the life of a brain-damaged woman, one Oregon congressman is doing all he can to stop the bill.

The emergency measure, which passed the Senate today, would allow Terri Schiavo's (SHY'-vohz) parents to take their case to a federal judge and take Schiavo's fate out of Florida courts. Judges there had ordered her feeding tube removed.

But Oregon's Democratic Congressman Earl Blumenauer says the measure is immoral because Schiavo made it clear to her husband that she would not want to live in a vegetative state.

He is organizing the opposition to the measure, which comes before the House on Sunday afternoon. One-third of the members present need to vote "No" to ensure that the feeding tube is not put back in.

My understanding is that this is a federal bill, and if it passes, Terri's case goes immediately to the federal courts, over Greer's head. He's out of the picture, at least for the time being. And Terri's tube would have to be reinstated.

That is my understanding. I'm not a lawyer.

Considering that President Bush is coming back to Washington on Sunday, cutting his vacation short, just to sign the bill, after it's passed, I expect that there is a virtual certainty of the bill passing.

Bush Cuts Vacation, Hopes to Sign Schiavo Bill

The real question is how soon afterwards will they be able to get Terri's feeding tube reinserted? Tomorrow afternoon will already be 48 hrs since they stopped feeding and hydrating her, by Monday it will be three whole days -- without food is bad enough, but without any water is really cruel. Judge Greer even forbade for people to put icechips into Terri's mouth to relieve her horrible thirst.

Judicial terrorism

The court-ordered starvation death of Terri Schindler-Schiavo has begun.

Thumbing his nose at congressional subpoenas designed to launch an investigation into the case that has captured worldwide attention, Circuit Court Judge George Greer ordered on Friday that Terri's sustenance and hydration tube be removed, claiming there is "no cogent reason" why Congress should intervene. "I don't think legislative agencies or bodies have business in the court's proceedings," Greer told attorneys during a conference call, according to a Florida television station.

The decision came amidst a last-minute flurry of activity in the Florida Legislature and U.S. Congress to pass a measure that would save the brain-disabled woman's life. But despite efforts by countless lawmakers and citizens across the country, Terri's feeding tube was removed shortly after the 1 p.m. Eastern deadline imposed by Judge Greer in late February. Congress is scheduled to meet today to pass a bill that would put the case into federal court and ostensibly order the reinsertion of Terri's feeding tube.

"Perhaps for the first time in American history," commented Alliance Defense Fund attorney Michael Johnson, "we have a court ordering essentially the murder of an innocent person." The injustice is staggering. Today, a guiltless woman is being executed by the most inhumane method imaginable, while those who have tirelessly worked to end her life walk free.

The acts of Judge Greer and his cohorts in the Florida court system can only be called one thing: Judicial terrorism.

For decades, the government of the United States soft peddled around terrorist actions overseas. Such negligence emboldened foreign terrorists to finally commit atrocities on our own soil. Similarly, the executive and legislative branches of government have turned a blind eye over time to abuses of power in the judicial branch. Our nation has now reached a point at which an activist judge, aided and abetted by a corrupt judicial system, can terrorize an entirely innocent woman by condemning her to a death universally recognized as one of the most inhumane ways to expire.

Death by dehydration is anything but quick and peaceful; it can last as long as two weeks. Terri will suffer extreme thirst, drying out her mouth. She will experience nausea and cramping in her arms and legs. Her skin will become dry and wrinkled as fluids are drawn from the skin to hydrate the organs. The mucous membranes of her mouth and lips will crack. Her breathing will become labored and difficult. Her muscles will spasm, resulting in extreme agitation. She may suffer seizures. And finally, she will do what her estranged husband, Michael Schiavo, and the other fans of the Culture of Death want her to do – she will die.

Our nation is consumed with the threat of terrorism from the Middle East. We value our own lives and we expect our government to protect us from the bombs and dictatorial maniacs mankind has produced. There's only one problem: While we obsess over al-Qaida and North Korea as the greatest threats to our national security, judicial terrorism is destroying the soul of our nation. The slow, painful starvation death that Terri has been unjustly condemned to is merely one bad cell in a cancerous tumor that is eating away at the very core of American conscience.

Frighteningly, many Americans are not even aware that such an egregious miscarriage of justice is taking place on their own soil. Some don't even care. Living in a country that still recognizes many God-given freedoms, our senses have become dulled to what tyranny and wickedness really are. As long as evil is neatly tucked away in hospices or abortion clinics, we go on with our everyday lives. As long as the heinous injustice doesn't affect us, we refuse to think about it.

America considers herself a civilized nation. We eschew the barbaric practices of ancient Rome, the religious conflicts of the Medieval period, and the mass genocide that took place in wars throughout the 20th century. Yet now, a entirely innocent woman, one who committed no crime other than requiring more love and attention than most other Americans, is starving to death on our watch. Are we really any less barbaric than Rome, or have we simply learned new ways to veil our wickedness behind the curtain of science, choice and a so-called "right to die"?

It's a searching question.

The Bible has been discounted by the intelligentsia of our modern era as old-fashioned and outdated, yet its words still convict the human heart with Truth: "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20).

Sometimes, it takes a kick in the face for individuals to wake up and realize tyranny is on their doorstep. The ongoing starvation of Terri Schindler Schiavo should be a disturbing reminder of what an out-of-control judiciary can do when the executive and legislative branches of government are slow to deal with it. Having come this far, both branches must boldly step forward and use the fullest extent of their powers to counter-balance this tyrannical judiciary.

If we don't wake up, what may come next is the Final Solution at our very own door.

Man who was Schiavo's advocate recalls his role

BY CARA BUCKLEY

Miami Herald

http://www.kansas.com/mld/kansas/news/nation/11182554.htm

TAMPA, Fla. - Two dark scenarios haunt Jay Wolfson even now, a year and a half after his brief appointment to be a neutral arbiter, the one man asked by the state of Florida to stand in Terri Schiavo's shoes.

One is that the severely brain-damaged woman is in a terrible lightless place, aware of nothing but a yawning, endless hopelessness.

The other is that even though he never elicited a response from her, despite all the pleading and cajoling he did at her bedside, that he might have missed some subtle, nearly invisible signs that she was somewhere in there, aware.

"Imagine not having hope and being aware that's all you had was no hope. The horror. It's like not being, but knowing that you're not," Wolfson said recently. "That's one thing. The other is, what if she's knocking on a door somewhere and I was walking through all the wrong corridors and I missed it."

Wolfson was appointed by a Florida court in the fall of 2003 to be Schiavo's guardian ad litem, or guardian at law, to deduce Schiavo's best interests and represent neither her husband nor her parents but Schiavo herself.

This makes Wolfson one of the very few people to have spent extended time with Schiavo and gauged her level of awareness without having a vested interest.

In the end, after long hours at Schiavo's bedside and after poring over 30,000 pages of legal documents, Wolfson concluded that Schiavo was indeed in a permanent vegetative state.

It wasn't the conclusion he had hoped to make. "You want to weigh in on life as opposed to death," Wolfson said. "You want some way to elicit a response."

Wolfson, who is a distinguished service professor of public health and medicine, was asked to decide whether Schiavo's feeding tube should be removed and whether more tests should be done to assess her ability to swallow.

He scoured 13 years' worth of legal documents and extensively interviewed Schiavo's husband and her parents. In his time with Schiavo, he tried to determine whether she was aware of and interactive with the world.

When awake, Schiavo's eyes rolled about the room. She made random noises that sounded like groaning or the start of a laugh or cry.

But court documents said Schiavo's cerebral cortex, where reason and emotions are housed, had degenerated to fluid. So Wolfson set about trying to determine whether Schiavo's noises and jerks were merely reflexive or whether they indicated something more.

He played Elton John CDs for her, and Bach and Mozart and music from the late 1980s, when she was in her 20s, before her collapse. He held her hands, squeezing them, and stroked her hair and face.

He put his face close to hers and tried to make eye contact, pleading desperately, trying to will her into giving him any kind of sign.

"I would beg her, 'Please, Terri, help me,' " he said. "You want to believe there's some connection. You hope she's going to sit up in bed and say, 'Hey, I'm really here, but don't tell anybody.' Or, 'I'm really here, tell everybody!' "

But Schiavo never made eye contact. When Wolfson visited her when her parents were there, she never made eye contact with them either, he said. And for all of Wolfson's pleadings and coaxing, he never got what he most wanted: a sign.

Wolfson was dismayed to learn Friday that Barbara Weller, a lawyer for Schiavo's parents, claimed that Schiavo tried to speak. "Terri does not speak," he said. "To claim otherwise reduces her to a fiction."

In the 38-page report he wrote after his time with Schiavo, Wolfson said the best decision for her could be made only if both sides agreed to fresh, independent medical testing. If the new testing showed she couldn't swallow on her own and that Schiavo had no hope for improvement, then the feeding tube should be pulled.

Both parties were on the verge of agreeing to these new conditions, Wolfson said, but once the Florida Supreme Court struck down Terri's Law his efforts were moot.

no but this poster is relatively new with only 29 comments.

i found this with just a few minutes of cruising, and it was the best of many. this issue cuts across party registration, and puts to rest the assertions of the likes of Peggy Noodlebrain that the GOP is in big trouble if they intervene because it will split the Republican Base. What is really going to happen is that it will energize the base and cement the crossover democrats in the deep South. we have seen on this board that there are a lot of Freeper Friends who are placing federalist issues above our concerns for Terri, but the bottom line is that this is good for Terri, and good for the Grand Old Party. I said once before that if Frist gets this done he's elected President in 08. DeLay has too much baggage and is too outspoken, but a valuable asset, but, IMHO not electable.
Bush the younger has been enjoined for two years from intervention (he tried to help but was slammed by the Florida courts)

This case is disturbing as you follow the news. I hate reading the on-line voting that want just a yes and no answer as to who should have the right to end her life the husband or her parents. This case is not that black and white. It is a human rights case of the innocent. Granted all we have is the news to get our info and some of it is troubling:

*Was there a pattern of domestic abuse and were her injuries documented with doctors think I heard they were
*Did he strangle her...guess we won't ever know the truth
*Did he try to administer CPR - heard he didn't
*He received 1 million in reward money for her treatment and then once received he declined therapy for her.
*He has been in a relationship for over 10 years and has 2 kids does he truly care for her or is she just a burden he wants to get rid of
*Heard he wants her cremated(sp) if she dies and no autoposy...what's the rush let's see if she did have spinal injuries

Anyway, I know there is more but bless these parents that want to take care of their child...what a burden. He obviously wants to go on with his life, divorce her and let the parents who gave birth to her take care of her. This man is very selfish and there is just something not right.

So thank God for the Senate and for our President supporting this voiceless woman. Let's try a year of therapy without the husband being involved and see how this lady improves.

From another thread, and worth putting on this one:

And isn't it amazing to watch people defend this on the grounds that his wife isn't really alive, implying the marriage contract loses it's teeth based on her incapacited condition rendering his co-habitation and child producing justified, but then turn around and argue for her death based on the viability and sacrosanct nature of the marriage contract?
