McGwire Tells Panel He Won't Name Names

WASHINGTON (AP) - Retired slugger Mark McGwire Thursday told a congressional panel investigating drugs in baseball that he would not "participate in naming names" of players who used steroids. McGwire did not say in his opening statement to the House Government Reform Committee whether he used steroids.

Two current players, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro, said they never used steroids. That duo and McGwire were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by Jose Canseco in a best-selling book that helped prompt the hearing.

In a tense scene, Canseco sat at the same table as the other players as he told the lawmakers that he could not fully answer their questions because of concerns his testimony could be used against him.

Choking back tears, his voice cracking, McGwire said he knows that steroid use can be dangerous and will do whatever he can to discourage young athletes from using them.

"What I will not do, however, is participate in naming names and implicating my friends and teammates," said McGwire, who ranks sixth in major league history with 583 homers.

It doesn't bother me at all, it's within the rules of the game

If every one got to wear one, fine. But you have to get an exemption to do so. Therefore, it makes it an unfair playing field. By the way, he didn't start wearing it until the 2000 season, since then he has hit 258 of his 703 home runs.

I'm having trouble understanding what jurisdiction the Congress has also, and I don't condone the use of steroids either.

That was a great little exchange there. The sanctimonious "Bernie" told Shilling that he gave a politician's answer, and that he should be a politician. Some other congressman interjected, "Bernie, you better be careful there about encouraging him, he's a republican."

Congresman: "Congress has a vested interest in seeing that there is no cheating in baseball"

What a crock!

McGwire pretty much admitted to taking steroid which isn't a surprise, but it is still sad.

I don't buy the "pretty much admitted" arguments, because a lot of people are inferring things that might not be there.

Canseco, Caminiti, Rios, and the Giambis have all actually admitted steroid use, maybe a few others.

I'm not going to go along with this witch hunt. Innocent until shown otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, and I'd need a confession or a positive steroid test before I'm going to say someone did steroids. People are getting hysterical over this.

Between juiced balls, corked bats and steroids, basically the home run record has been meaningless since about 1989.

While you're at it, don't forget bandbox ballparks, diluted expansion pitching and the postage-stamp strike zone.

They know steriods were used and my guess is 50% or more used them. When I think of the college kids who go to school who are not athletes, and just go to class pay their own tuition, look to these type fakes with ill in the pit of their tummies

I guess you just don't like facts getting in the way of your guesses. Fact-2003 testing showed 6%, Fact 2004 testing showed less than 2%. But maybe we should just take your word for it that the number is really 50%. Teach your kids about drugs, don't wait for Congress to do it. Their war on drugs shows that they can't do anything.

You may be correct, techincally Andro is classified as a steriod.

So, techincally under the law McGwire could not testify to being clean.

Fair enough....my biggest problem with Bonds is that huge padding he gets to wear on his right arm. You can't push him off of the plate, it takes away the fear factor of hitting a major league pitcher.

I've never understood this either. All he has to do is flex his bicep and the ricochet from the pitch would kill the thirdbaseman.
