McGwire Tells Panel He Won't Name Names

WASHINGTON (AP) - Retired slugger Mark McGwire Thursday told a congressional panel investigating drugs in baseball that he would not "participate in naming names" of players who used steroids. McGwire did not say in his opening statement to the House Government Reform Committee whether he used steroids.

Two current players, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro, said they never used steroids. That duo and McGwire were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by Jose Canseco in a best-selling book that helped prompt the hearing.

In a tense scene, Canseco sat at the same table as the other players as he told the lawmakers that he could not fully answer their questions because of concerns his testimony could be used against him.

Choking back tears, his voice cracking, McGwire said he knows that steroid use can be dangerous and will do whatever he can to discourage young athletes from using them.

"What I will not do, however, is participate in naming names and implicating my friends and teammates," said McGwire, who ranks sixth in major league history with 583 homers.

I'm convinced that all Congressional participants have Bush in their long term witch hunt goals.

You have nailed it. Waxman is after Bush, for his time as part owner of the Rangers.

"I don't disagree baseball needs to clean up it's act, but why does the government have to get involved?"

Because this country has, by and large, forgotton that there are a good many things that the federal government was never supposed to be involved in. The federal government has managed to do just what many of the founders and framers knew it would if given the chance--increase its own power at the expense of the states, private entities, and the people.

So are we supposed to feel sorry for this lying steroid taking freak for protecting his roid swilling buddies? Mark, man-up and admit it, or did you lose all of your manhood in that stall when you bared your ass for Jose.

Jose Canseco is gospel now?

Show me a positive blood test for McGwire.

How many of these lame Congesspeople, save for Bunning, were always the last one chosen when picking sides?

Come on get over it. Without him baseball is hockey without a following. Besides he was a slugger when he was a young player. Others were not and they now have surpassed him.

Because baseball cannot and will not do it alone.

Baseball is already doing it alone, though they took to long to do it.

Waxman wants to create a "Bush knew" scenario for steroids based on Canseco's speculation, that's why Congress is conducting their steroid witch hunt now, after MLB is already starting to clean up its act.

Doesn't Congress have anything better to do?

Yes they do. See this article.

They did a great job on this part of the budget. </sarcasm>

I believe you just may be correct and I hate it I really like Mark. But I believe all of these players along with major league baseball will castigate Conseco. I do not condone him taking steroids but the fact is this will be the only opportunity to bring out the truth and you can see those who even claim they are against steroids including Curt Schilling circling the wagons for the sport. As a young man I loved all sports today I have very little use for any of them because they are all liars and cheaters and corrupt as hell. They are not interested in the youth of America, they are interested in winning at all cost and the almighty dollar.

I disagree with your statement. If you listened to the previous panel of experts, the only legitimate athletic organization that has a real steroid testing program in place, are the Olympics.

"I will believe McGwire over Canseco any day of the week.

Then you are in denial. Look at the facts, all he has to do is say what Schilling, Sosa and Thomas said. That he did not get an injection in the ass by Jose. Jose's right there, look him in the eye in front of God and country and call him a liar. He knows he's under oath and he can't do it. No one is asking him to name names just deny the charges. That whole name names non-issue is a weak attempt to divert attention from the question everyone wants him to answer under oath. McGwire isn't worthy of your loyalty.

I don't disagree baseball needs to clean up it's act, but why does the government have to get involved?

Because George Bush used to have an interest in a major league baseball team, their brand-new darling Jose Canseco has come out and said that Bush should have and probably did know about the steroid problems in baseball, and they're so anxious to bring Bush down that they'll make even this stretch in an attempt to make it happen.

Between juiced balls, corked bats and steroids, basically the home run record has been meaningless since about 1989.
