Halifax port security about to be cut (by 2/3)

Broadcast News
March 16, 2005

HALIFAX -- According to a news report, the number of police officers patrolling the Port of Halifax is about to be cut by two-thirds. Currently, nine Halifax Regional Police officers have been providing round-the-clock security at the port, seven days a week. The officers also patrol the harbour checking for drunk boaters and safety violations. But sources tell a national TV news station that security is going to be scaled back to just three officers patrolling the water and the entire port. The national TV news station also says that starting in two weeks, there will be no officers on the night shift and no water patrols on weekends. Port officials have refused comment, and a Halifax police spokesman isn't saying much. Constable Mark Hobeck does say that the contract to police the port is under negotiation. In 2002, a Senate committee report described rampant gang activity, including drugs and stolen cars, at the three major ports in Canada.

You know how it is. Canada sent troops to Afghanistan without guns. They refuse to have missile defense protection from the US. It makes sense that Canada is up north of us. It's like having a crazy uncle in the attic.

I think Canada is more and more becoming a security threat to the US. Not only will they not cooperate with us in the defense of the continent, their lack of defense of their own territorial integrity will open up channels for terrorists to infiltrate to the United States.

Assuming the answer you're looking for is "Canada", do you have a link?

It's my understanding that none of the 9/11 attackers entered from Canada.

Not sure if it was Atta, but did find this ...

Despite that, officials in New England maintain that several of the terrorists crossed into the U.S. from Canada using remote border crossings in Maine.

At least one took a ferry to Maine from Nova Scotia, they say. And at least two of the hijackers crossed the border at Coburn Gore, Me., where a single immigration inspector usually takes care of everything that passes by on the two-lane road outside.

Nova Scotia to Maine could land at Bar Harbor or Portland. Since Atta and one other drove south into Portland, on September 10 I believe (photographed in and about stores withing 10 miles of the Portland Jetport), I figure they came in from points north.

3 officers to secure the whole area and ports 7 days a week? No officers at night or sea patrols on the weekend? Thats so inadequate that there might as well be none.

I saw a special report on the officers at the eastern ports and how they are overrun with calls since there is only one officer at a time. They are overworked and therefore have poor moral and not in any shape to do their job in that state. They have to cover an area that is impossible to manage for one person.

Typical "we trust everyone" liberal attitude

I believe this has been disproven since then. Let me see what I can find ...

Two of the hijackers apparently came to the United States from Nova Scotia, Canada, crossing the border via a ferry to Bar Harbor, Maine. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Interpol are assisting U.S. law enforcement in retracing these hijackers' steps in Canada.

That article is from 2001, and facts since then may support your contention that none of the 9/11 hijackers entered the US via Canada. But in my opinion, the US/Canada border is so porous and heavily traveled that it makes sense that at least some of the hijackers entered the US through this border.

I bet the money they are saving is going to promote more Liberal friendly ad campaigns (they know they can probably get away with it) and help enforce the language policing in Quebec.

If the police cant do it anymore, when will us Canadians have to start taking time off work to sit on the docks and protect our homes on our own initiative...

I'm looking too, just for fun. For what it's worth, the Bar Harbor ferry does not go to Halifax. It transits between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Bar Harbor, Maine. So, as far as I know, nobody is asserting that any of the 9/11 hijackers came via Halifax.

BTW, you won't get any arguement from me that improvements need to be made here in Canada. I'm all for doing what it takes to protect North America. Then again, I'm a Conservative.

Let's be clear, none of the 19 came from Canada - we let them into the U.S. ourselves. Let's not be blaming other folks for our own misdeeds...

Halifax has already been blown up once IIRC, when an ammunition ship went up during WWI. Hard for terrorists to do worse to the place than what happened then. That is their problem. Ours is whatever comes south via Halifax. We need to maintain our own adequate security over the border to our north as the spineless and toothless Martin government clearly won't protect us. We also need to diligently check ships arriving in the US via Halifax.

A follow up ...

Changes Coming for Halifax Port Security

Broadcast News
March 17, 2005

The Port of Halifax will shake up in how it patrols the waterfront, but a spokesman says security will not be compromised.

George Malec, who is in charge of security, says they're negotiating a new contract with the Halifax Regional Police force.

He says he anticipates some changes, but he insists there will be improvements.

It's been suggested in some reports that the number of uniform officers on the waterfront will be cut by as much as two-thirds.

Malec says that is not true.

He says the port will be spending the same on policing services, but officers will utilize a new patrol boat, instead of sitting in cars or conducting foot patrols.

Last May the federal government announced $115 million in upgrades for the ports, including closed-circuit TV systems and fences to meet new international security standards.

Malec says they'll also be taking advantage of that technology.

Transport Canada spokesman Steve Bone says the port has a security plan and one way or another it will stick to it.
