A video camera, which is supposed to be monitored by two guards in a command post, shows the two arriving in the holding area between two courtrooms, according to a law enforcement official who viewed the tape.
The video shows Hall guiding Nichols, whose hands are still handcuffed behind his back, face-first into one of two open cells.
Hall releases one cuff and turns Nichols around to unhook the remaining cuff, which is dangling from his wrist. She uncuffs him so he can change from a jail jumpsuit into street clothes.
The muscular, 33-year-old Nichols then lunges at Hall, knocking the petite, 51-year-old woman backward into another cell. Both disappear from camera view because having a camera inside the actual holding cells is prohibited for privacy reasons. Two to three minutes later, Nichols emerges from the cell, holding Hall's gun belt and police radio. He picks up her keys from the floor and locks her inside the cell. Nichols then enters the empty cell.
A couple of minutes later, he emerges dressed in civilian clothes. He locks the door behind him and saunters calmly out of the holding area, carrying the gun belt, according to the law enforcement official who viewed the tape. Nichols appears to know which key to use to unlock the holding area door and enters a vacant courtroom on the eighth floor.
"This never would have happened to begin with if they had a man in there who was his same height and weight or taller."
...or two or three men. I've seen many of these guys at my county courthouse. They are big, full of muscles and, some, mean-looking dudes. That's the kind of guys that are needed to watch over these gangsta thugs.
Are the doctors as competent as the police force in Atlanta.
When I understand why he cooked pancakes, I will know who the real rat is.
How old is old? I'm curious because I was as passionately interested in my job when I was forced to medically retire as I was at anytime during my career. I loved solving the challenges and was mature enough to realize you had to do the mundane because it wasn't going to go away. Or are you saying it's the type of job? And if it's the type of job, I've seen plenty of older men goofing off.
Was Nichols on the phone with his lawyer during the night?
So was, by the way, the massive death count during the Asian Tsunami.
Since none of us appear to be psychic, no one was ready for this either.
This man would have found a weakness to exploit, somewhere, sooner or later. He was studying the situation to take advantage of the weakest link.
We should be concerned over how the slack in the current system is corrected, but placing blame? The blame is we are human and we make mistakes. The Officials will be busy dealing with blame. I am more concerned with why he did all this to escape, then cooks pancakes and has the cops called in.
I think I'll just assume you're not as stupid as your reply suggests and leave it at that.
Just to show you how incompetent they are; they ran around for 15 hours looking for a green Honda that he supposedly escaped in and it was in the parking garage all along. Another AJC employee going to their car that night noticed the car one level (I forget whether it was up on level or down)from where he supposedly highjacked it. By this time he had caught the transit system train and left the downtown area.

He had been there 10 times, same routine, and except for the aborted shiv plan, had been a good boy.
Monotony breeds carelessness.
Oh, but haven't you heard? That careless female deputy was actually a sex-starved nymphomaniac trying to get her jollies.
When the videotape is finally released, we'll probably find out she was trying to cop a feel right there in the holding cell and works a second night job as a stripper. In fact, she probably wasn't even dressed herself. At the very least, she most likely was wearing a G-string under her uniform.
I wonder what kind of drugs she does?
Good sarcasm. . .serious question: a SHE watching a HE change clothes. . . hmmm. . .I ask, do they allow male guards to watch female prisoners change clothes? I mean, I thought we had privacy policies that ensured same-sex observations when changing clothes. Just imagine the outrage from female prisoners howling about men watching them change clothes.
Valid question. A very valid question, if fact. Maybe that will be one of the reforms that come out of this avoidable tragedy. If not, it should be.
(She probably has a meth lab.)
Is it possible that this guy had some inside help? He knows what keys to use in the building and knows what box to go to to get her gun....
Please understand if I choose to draw on my own experiences instead of your assumptions. I don't know who peed in your Wheaties, but it wasn't me. You have yourself a merry evening now.
Notice in the news that "the suspect overpowered the guard" (no mention of gender) "taking the guard's gun" (not "her gun").
Well, what do you know! A petite woman lost a strength contest to a man. Who knew!
So true.
It's like at the pool where I swim. Do I feel safer with a strong male lifeguard on duty or a 100 lb. high school girl?
Political correctness overrides common sense.
So far, the incompetency list includes:
1) Having only one deputy escort a large powerful prisoner in an isolated area.
2) Having a 5-ft-something 51 YO female deputy escort a 6-ft-something 33 YO male prisoner into an isolated area.
3) Two deputies who are assigned to monitor the security camera(s) are not in position.
4) Apparently ignoring the trial judge's request for additional security following discovery of "shanks" on this prisoner the previous day.
It's called "situational management". What could they have been thinking?
5) Where was the courtroom security (i.e. good guys with guns)?
6) Where was the court house security (i.e. good guys with guns)?
7) Failure to sweep the parking garage for the second hijacked vehicle.
This represents abysmal management by the Fulton County Sheriff's Department. It's difficult to believe, but they actually make Chief Moose look competent by comparison. Un-freaking-believable!
