Welcome to Canada: The Great White Waste of Time.
The Weekly Standard ^ | March 21, 2005 | Matt Labash

If the national mental illness of the United States is megalomania, that of Canada is paranoid schizophrenia. – Margaret Atwood, Canadian writer

Vancouver, British Columbia – Whenever I think of Canada … strike that. I'm an American, therefore I tend not to think of Canada. On the rare occasion when I have considered the country that Fleet Streeters call "The Great White Waste of Time," I've regarded it, as most Americans do, as North America's attic, a mildewy recess that adds little value to the house, but serves as an excellent dead space for stashing Nazi war criminals, drawing-room socialists, and hockey goons.

Henry David Thoreau nicely summed up Americans' indifference toward our country's little buddy when he wrote, "I fear that I have not got much to say about Canada. … What I got by going to Canada was a cold." For the most part, Canadians occupy little disk space on our collective hard drive. Not for nothing did MTV have a game show that made contestants identify washed-up celebrities under the category "Dead or Canadian?"

If we have bothered forming opinions at all about Canadians, they've tended toward easy-pickings: that they are a docile, Zamboni-driving people who subsist on seal casserole and Molson. Their hobbies include wearing flannel, obsessing over American hegemony, exporting deadly Mad Cow disease and even deadlier Gordon Lightfoot and Nickelback albums. You can tell a lot about a nation's mediocrity index by learning that they invented synchronized swimming. Even more, by the fact that they're proud of it.

What I know about Canada:

It is a beautiful place
but run by a Socialistic bunch of idiots
There are some good people but let themselves
be run by Commies and French city dwellers in the east.
What they need is a good revolution run by a
Ronald Reagan type, or John Wayne.

Yes, thats one place we got is beer. None of that mainstream labatts or molson either, the true stuff like alberta gueninue draft and Big Rock breweries...

But hey, ever since i went to see the Astros play a intraleague game in Seattle and got a cold Bud on a warm seattle night, your yankee Bud beer brings back good memories...

Okay, I became intrigued with the concept of Poutine as standard, icky Canadian food because I had thought I had remembered poutine as a Louisiana / Cajun dish.  So, there I was, Googling the Image Search for pix of poutine and their associated links, when I found this one (warning:  this is a homosexual blog, so don't click on any of the links if this bothers you)

Straight woman might be downfall of Canada's gay tv network: "Bill Craig who owns the controlling interest in Canada's PrideVision owes his ex-wife $1.4 million. The couple broke up in 1993 and for the last seven years he has been in a relationship with another man."

*******************************************

Being a proud, unapologetic, healthy, hetero American (Seattle) stoat, I'm not sure what if anything this says about Canada but because of the odd coincidence of my finding this link while researching poutine, I thought that others here might be amused   :-)

At the advanced age of 53 I am well beyond the chick stage.

And yes I am a Canadian. I make no apologies for it and have not attempted to hide the fact. I also defend any American who professes to be proud to be American.

I just do not like ant-Canadian rants from knuckle dragging cubicle monkeys like Matt Labash.

I read his whole article and it contained not one single factual statement regarding a substantive issue concerning Canada/US relations.

Canada is not going to disappear. Canada and the US are the two most economically integrated countries in the world.

Labash is one of those so called 'Journalists' who is far too enamored by the sound of his own voice. I suspect he's the kind of guy who smells his own armpits while watching TV.

I have to wonder how much he pays his girlfriend to spend time with him given that he is a complete bore.

By the way thanks for letting me vent on you.

Cheers

Im half american, half canadian with dual and lived in both and you have NO idea what you are talking about.

Did you sit down and just spout off random things that came into your head about beer or what??? cause none of what you say has any credibility at all.

IF your gonna bash canada stick to foreign policy or social welfare or something else with backing, dont just make up stuff that does nothing but allows you to see yourself type.

Canada is so boring, even this article about Canada is boring. 8-)

But went salmon fishing off Graham Island near Vancouver last July. Brought home over 200lbs of King and Coho. I don't think you can buy salmon that good.

Taxes the heck out of them which saps their drive and initiative.

But the people are really to blame for allowing such leadership.

Rush is a great band. I especially like how they utilize the synthesizers.

I liked it when they were going to name one of their northern territories, "Bob". Of course, they didn't do it, deciding instead to make Beige their national color.

I thought I read somewhere that Canada was America's imbecile cousin in the attic.

Actually all the beautiful Jazz and Country and Western singers come from my neck of the woods. Not to mention models.

When my niece visited New York three headhunters from major agencies approached her while she was shopping and tried to book appointments with her. She wasn't interested.

On the other hand Calgary has the Flame Girls but that's another matter.

I was born in Montreal. Lovely city. What's really a marvel is that Canada remains united at all. The French and the English may hate each others' guts but deep down they know the Confederation made them mutually prosperous. There's something to be said for a marriage of commercial convenience.
