Buck up, Tonk -- he's gone.

I've worked in the media for a long time. When you give the old guy the heave-ho, you always say he's available for "special projects." That never happens.

Dan's History.

Rather was not fired and did not retract his story.

He's here to stay.

He's still a Reporter for CBS.

Thank you for that KFBK link in #888. I've got it bookmarked. We can actually listen to a rerun of Rush for free? I thought if you missed his regular broadcast you were out of luck unless you're a "24/7" subscriber.

I didn't realize you had hearing problems... I hope everything turns out well for you. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. :o)

You know, it suddenly occurs to me that we haven't referred to people like Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, Chris Matthews, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and the whole lot by their proper name, the one they once most hated more than any other:

"The Establishment."

Do you have trouble with your satellite dish reception during bad weather?

Never lost reception during any of the hurricanes last year, except one of the wires was blown loose for the upstairs box. Have reception problems during heavy thunderstorms, and when a great blue heron or egret sits on the dish.

Did you catch Dan's revisionist history during his self-tribute tonight? The Carter presidency didn't exist between Watergate and Iran-Contra.

Rather, 73, is returning to full-time reporting for CBS’s “60 Minutes” broadcasts.

Oh, and we had an entire national newscast WITHOUT ONE PICTURE OF PRESIDENT BUSH!

Well, that's a relief, anyway - one good thing in a farewell 'cast I didn't see.

A theoretically-free country doesn't require Big Brother politicians on TV all the time; our "news" is far too government-centric as it is, consisting of re-feeding us the prepared pap generated in D.C. and elsewhere parasites congregate.

Most times, the two-headed cat stories or even a test pattern would be preferable.

I would even have some slight respect for him if he said "yes I Lewinskyed the left for all those years on my reports. So what."

LOL. Fat chance. ;-)

It is amazing how much our forefathers trusted that the people had enough sense to come in out of the rain--or to be able to think for themselves without having a nanny state do it for them! Will we ever get back to that stage--oh, yeah, FReepers do it all the time...never mind!

Incredible... you had satellite reception during those hurricanes? You should do testimonials for your satellite company!

Would love to see a photo of one of those big birds sitting up on your dish! ;-)

Too bad you didn't see tonight's CBS newscast then. You would have delighted in it. Instead of 2-headed cat stories, you got "2nd hand smoke causes breast cancer", except that the research doens't prove it.....whoops! Or you got the bankrupcty changes will put more people in poverty.

It wasn't "government-centric" at all. You should have seen it, it's right up your alley.

This is Captain Dan Rather, reporting from the DNC Submarine, LeftWing.  We have spotted the enemy, the USS GW Bush, and we have him in out sights.  Listen in to our commands as we prepare to sink the enemy's ship of state.

Captain Rather:    Up periscope - bearing - mark, range - mark.

Crewman:            bearing 126 degrees - range 1525 yards

Captain Rather:    Torpedo room - ready tubes 1 and 2.

2nd crewman:        Tubes 1 and 2 ready sir.

Captain Rather:      Fire 1    (whoosh)

2nd crewman:       One's away, captain.

Captain Rather:      Fire 2    (whoosh)

2nd crewman:       Two's away, captain.

1st crewman:         Both running hot, straight and true, captain - uh, ah-oh.

Captain Rather:      What do you mean, ah-oh, I don't want to hear ah-oh.

1st crewman:         Well, captain, there's good news and bad news.  The bad news is that fish 1 has veered hard to starboard.  The good news is that the torpedo room reports that the number 1 fish wasn't the torpedo that they had painted Bush's name on.   Someone had painted the name Buckhead on it, whoever that is.

Captain Rather:      OK, so how about the 2nd fish?

1st crewman:         Well, captain, there's good news and bad news.  The good news is that the torpedo room reports that the number 2  fish did have Bush's name painted on it.   The bad news is that it, too, has veered hard to starboard and both have circled back and are now coming straight for us.

Captain Rather:      Emergency blow, abandon ship.

1st crewman:         It's too late, captain - they're going to hit and take us down.   We can save most of the crew, but I'm afraid you and the ranking officers will have to go down with the ship.

"Dan Rather reporting, (glurg, glub)."

"Damn, this tub's got more holes than a screen door."

"Mr. Rather, you're still on the air."

"Courage (blub, blub)."

Courage: airing a hitpiece days before a Presidential election based on poorly forged documents.

Exactly!

He is really a very ill man. Totally separated from reality. And what has happened to him in his cocoon is about the same as what happens to many liberals who hang out with all the same kind of people.

And now Chris Matthews is asking did the mean old right wingers run him off?

Yeh, these "mean old right wingers" did it. LOL.

(I love this) -- Anatomy of a Freeper...http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1303577/posts

For those of you who just stumble around Instapundit, Hugh Hewitt, Powerline or The Corner, and a couple of internet sites to get your dose of non-Ratherised news, you may not have ever heard of a "Freeper". In a minute, I'm going to use the following example to give you a window into their world.

Freepers are people who post to a rather interesting bulletin board service called Free Republic. A lot of my blogging friends know about them, but surprisingly enough, not very many of them view them as a news source they visit frequently. I think the Freepers are an essential element in gathering news. If you go in with the right mindset, and know what you are looking for, it can be a goldmine of information.

Hugh Hewitt has often called freepers the Coast Watchers of the new media. When news happens, either in print, on radio, or on television, someone will post a link, and much of the meat of the story, as the beginning of a thread. Within minutes, if the story is juicy enough, just like flies, freepers all over will descend on the story and give their two cents worth.

Here's where the discernment of the person surfing has to come in. There are saboteurs who will immediately try to spin the story, especially if it's political, and there will be people from every walk of life taking their shots until the end of the thread takes the original picture the story paints and turns it into a Picasso.

*****

When the Rathergate story broke, there were responses, theories, and updates literally every time you hit the refresh button. Freepers are very much part of the face of new media. They are also very much a part of the blogosphere.

The speed at which news travels on sites like this is the reason why liberals can no longer dominate the media and control the spin to suit their agenda. The news moves too fast. There are too many people who see stuff and post it, and there are too many smart people to praise it and spread it around if it has merit, and dissect it like a frog in biology class if it's bogus.

In cases like Rathergate, a bogus story can be proven false, spread all over the world, and completely discrediting of the original reporter before he/she comes to work the next morning.
