Texas titan signing off (Dan Rather); good bye and good riddance

Texas titan signing off

24-year run may be ending, but he insists he's still on hunt for 'big game'

11:32 PM CST on Tuesday, March 8, 2005

By ED BARK / The Dallas Morning News

NEW YORK – No, he's not nearly ready to pack it in at CBS News.

Dan Rather is adamant if not downright defiant on that particular topic. He is, however, packing up, with his long-held office under deconstruction during his final days as anchor of the storied CBS Evening News.

He's only moving across the street and just up the block to 555 W. 57th St., where he'll join the staff of 60 Minutes after taking a month or so off. The distance is short but perilous for an aging, vulnerable news warrior who risks being an army of one.

The 73-year-old Texan's record-setting 24-year reign in "The Chair" will end after tonight's Evening News. And he's going out not on top but under the still-heavy weights of "Memogate" and prolonged lousy Nielsen ratings.

Mr. Rather, known in part for his folksy "Dan-isms" and occasional oddly self-conscious moments, chooses to resolutely look ahead, leaving others to speculate on whether he's wearing blinders.

"It's a good time for me," he said. "I've had a terrific job for 24 years. I'm going to another terrific job. I have nothing to complain about. I can't wait to get to 60 Minutes. Yes, I have friends there. And there are some people who are not friends for one reason or another. They're peers. They know going in that I'll work hard. I'll be unrelenting in pursuit of big game."

Who is Dan Rather?
What about that Dan Rather guy?
Maybe we should try Dan Rather.
Let's get Dan Rather.
Maybe we could get Dan Rather.
Rather would be good, but we can't afford him.
Let's get a Dan Rather type.
Sort of a Dan Rather type, but younger.
Nyaa, not Dan Rather.
Dan Rather, the former anchorman.
Who the hell is Dan Rather?

you mean he's still on the air?

Tonight is his last night on the SeeBS Evening News.

He will be working with the 60 Minutes crew now.

Try again to take Dubya down, I suppose.

Maybe he'll finish the job he started September 8, 2004?
(Take himself TOTALLY out this time, hopefully).

This Dallas Morning Snooze's writer should be named Ed Barf. Dan should send him some knee pads embroidered with the SeeBS eye.
And then this worthless paper wonders why it has to lie about its circulation to get advertising.

BALLAD OF DAN RATHER

(Think "Beverly Hillbillies" theme song)

Come and listen to my story 'bout a man named Dan,
The documents were fake and he didn't give a dam*;
He put 'em on the air, an' he thought he'd done the job,
But up from the web come a howlin' mob.

Blogs, that is.
Web logs.
Checkin' facts.

Well, the first thing you know ol' Dan's a-runnin' fast;
Made a false report an' it bit him in the a$$;
He said 'dog-gonnit, I done thought I'd get away!'
But it turned out to be his a-reckonin' day.

Busted, that is.
Red-faced.
Mud in the eye.

Well, now it's time to say goodbye to Dan and all his men;
And they would like to shoot you folks for turnin' them in;
You're all invited back next week to watch the Evening News,
And see which correspondent's picked to fill Dan's empty shoes.

Y'all come back, now, hear?

"Dan Rather was born in Wharton, Texas, and grew up in a working class neighborhood of Houston. His father worked as an oil pipeliner. Neither of his parents had been to college and his father had never finished high school, but his mother was determined to see Dan graduate and go on to college."

Sad and sorry ending to a promising start!
