"Kind of like closing the barn door after the horse got out."

Or in...or, something...

:)

"Think we'll just play a couple of games of Scrabble and talk naughty instead. Much more sensible."

LOL, and with the Scrabble it's sufficiently intellectual, I think A. & H. would be pleased.

He might have been a pain in the butt to those around him, but Clemens had a LOT of people pegged right. "The Innocents Abroad" and "A Tramp Abroad" both talk extensively about French and German disdain for Americans (and Englishmen, to a lesser extent).

His rant about Abelard and Heloise (from the first book) might be a bit labored in spots, but I did like his take on Fulbert ("the old smooth bore"), and finally, here was a thread to put it in.

"Willy welly" is even more obscure - but gives a hint! *g

Yep, signed by Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian, and produced on an IBM Selectric typewriter.

It's traditional to sympathize with these poor lovers...
But Mark Twain pointed out that the girl's father was doing what any red blooded American man would have done to the seducer of his innocent daughter...
And no one is PC enough to note he was 37, and she was barely a teenager...yes, the "records" say she was 16, but most girls back then married by 15, so one suspects that she had the baby at 16...

I'm doing some genealogical research in a large db.

Weird names like you wouldn't believe.

There's a Reverend from 17th cent Massachusetts named Consternation,

who named his son (also a Rev) Indignation (I bet his sermons were fun!)

who named his son (Rev.) Procrastination and his daughter Apotheosis.

Procrastination had chidren named Advantageous and Autochtonous. There's also and Indoctrination and a Hammorlecheth as descendents.

I knew a guy in high school named Cash. No, he didn't have a sister named Carry, but it would have been funny if he did.

I can top that. One of the rival high schools in my county had a kid with the last name "Dickgraber." Graber pronounced gray-ber.

I remember it well, because not only was the name routinely mispronounced, I went to Boys' State with the guy and he mistakenly left his backpack somewhere. There was nearly a riot when the old American Legion guy asked a theater full of about 900 male high school juniors if David Dic...well, if he'd come up and get the backpack.

Think we'll just play a couple of games of Scrabble and talk naughty instead. Much more sensible.

If you restrict yourselves to four-letter words you won't score much.
