1,700 Blank Licenses Stolen From Nev. DMV
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-licenses-stolen,0,6326456.story?coll=sns-ap-nationworld-headlines
We must of been posting at the same time. :)
Slightly Off Topic (but not by much):
Need some help. A good friend of mine just called and told me that all his identification has been stolen. All of it. Here's what was stolen:
Birth Certificate
Social Security Card
VA Drivers License
FL Drivers License
Passport
He's filed a police report and will be talking with his bank tomorrow.
He called me for advice on what to do and I couldn't think of much. Can anyone provide some actions he can take to protect his identity? Any help greatly appreciated.
LOL better 2 than none at all!
:-)
that sucks. He needs to call the DMVs as well. This might help. I don't think he should wait until morning.

Thank you for the links and translations neosgirl.
Duly noted.
Bump!
NOTE: THIS IS AN OPINION.
Ok AD here's what your friend needs to do.
Call the local police departmennt.
File a report.
SAVE THE CASE NUMBER.
Your friend needs to contact Virginia and Florida
DMV's and report it. (2 state dl's? Interesting.)
Have him write down who he talked to and the
case/incident number if he has it.
Contact the department (usually a county office)
where your friend got his birth certificate or would
get his birth certificate. Have him write down who he
talked to and the case/incident number if he has it.
Contact the closest Social Security Agency. Have him
write down who he talked to and the case/incident
number.
Contact the U.S. State Department. Have him write
down who he talked to and the case/incident number
if he has it regarding his stolen passport.
Contact the credit reporting agencies like TRW, etc and
report it. Have him write down who he talked to and the
case/incident number.
THIS IS A SUGGESTION: Now comes the bad news. I suggest
your friend apply for all new cards with all new numbers. Get
all new bank account numbers, all new credit card numbers,
etc.
As for the Social Security and Driver's Licenses; they'll suggest
what is best.
Have your friend check his credit on a regular basis for at least
2 years if not longer.
Thanks CJ! I've relayed that to my friend. He's going to make some calls tonight.
Thank you DC and WakingUp for pointing to this article.

"1,700 Blank Licenses Stolen From Nev. DMV"
By Associated Press
March 8, 2005, 9:17 PM EST
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Thieves rammed a vehicle through the back wall of a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles office and stole 1,700 blank driver's licenses.
"This could be anything from a bunch of juveniles who want to be able to make IDs to buy beer, to major criminal activity or even terrorism," police spokesman Tim Bedwell said Tuesday. "We don't know what they took them for."
The theft occurred early Monday in a remote industrial area, authorities said. The thieves took blank licenses and laminated covers, a digital license camera, a camera computer and a license printer, DMV spokesman Kevin Malone said."
Yes, I am a mortgage broker and I can tell you exactly what your friend should do. To protect their credit rating and security of identity, immediately go in person to a bank or mortgage lending officer and have them contact the three major credit bureaus directly.
Notify the bureaus as to the date of the occurrence the identification involved, and the possibility of fraudulent activity. Offer them a series of answers to "security questions" which only your friend can answer.
Contact the issuing company for each credit card and debit card and ask to talk to someone about loss/consumer fraud prevention. Invoke an extra layer of security there as well! It is not good enough to rely upon their "lost or stolen" policies or the coverage those provide. Make certain that whomever in the credit bureaus or credit card companies your friend talks to, the full scope of their discussion is entered into a conversation log and a tracking number (similar to a transaction verif #) is assigned for quick easy reference. If it is possible to "climb the ladder" to speak to a senior level manager, do it. Get a hold of somebody with the power and authority to promise a course of action/protections, and make it actually happen.
Your friend should document this from their side as well - keeping an explicit log of who they talked to, when, and about what. This is insurance for your friend to know that they can have people who will be accountable.

This IS mind boggling! Illegals with DVD players don't need to risk their lives coming here - they're already living large!
Well, that makes me feel a lot better.
that sounds like great advice.
