New Poll Finds Bush Priorities Are Out of Step With Americans
The New York Times ^ | Adam Nagourney

The poll underscores just how little headway Mr. Bush has made in his effort to build popular support as his proposal for overhauling Social Security struggles to gain footing in Congress. At the same time, there has been an increase in respondents who say that efforts to restore order in Iraq are going well, even as an overwhelming number of Americans say Mr. Bush has no clear plan for getting out of Iraq.

Aw shut up Laz! Do you realize how many keyboards have been ruined by your quips? Are you getting a kickback from each keyboard sold by all manafacturers? If not, you need a new agent.

What the NYT fails to realize is that they have lost credibility with an appreciable amount of their shrinking circulation and with a more than appreciable amount of the voting public. Thus, if the NYT publishes a poll that says "X" many automatically assume the opposite must be true. This is a perfect case.

The President is going to get what he wants. Why? Because nobody knows exactly what he wants yet, he hasn't specified it, allowing him to stick his foot in the water judge the temperature and adjust accordingly. Hell, Mr. Bush has not even begun to push Soc. Security reform yet and has barely taken this to the public. Once again the NYT and the Dems have misjudged the amount of goodwill this President has with the voters.

The number who thought private accounts were a bad idea jumped to 69 percent if respondents were told that the private accounts would result in a reduction in guaranteed benefits.

Not a loaded question, eh? Besides, I thought the SCOTUS ruled long ago that there were no guaranteed benifits.

And 45 percent said Mr. Bush's private account plan would actually weaken the economic underpinnings of the nation's retirement system.

The only economic underpinnings to SS as of right now are the backs of the taxpayers.

Besides the fact that NYT sponsored polls are just part of their political agenda and should not be taken seriously, the President cannot and will not lead by polls. Moreover, most Americans don't take the time or effort to be informed about public policy issues.

I wonder if polls matter to the NYT when it involves gun control, affirmative action, prayer in schools, abortion, vouchers, etc.

Well that is the sign post that the dems are still willing to lose. If they continue to put out skewed polling it shows they are not willing to look at what they have been doing wrong on their side. When we have to worry is when they start admiting their failures in authentic ways and finding thier identity. Then they will start to compete again.... but it doesnt look like that is coming anytime soon.

Well, I could look at the details of the poll, but the headline tells me all I need to know. They conceptualized a headline they'd like to see be reality, than push polled to get the result.

Yeah, umm, I didn't fall for this during the election and I'm not about to start doing so now.

Bush is so out of step with Americans that he received 51%-52% percent of the vote. I'm curious. How many subscriptions can the N.Y.T's boast? How many viewers does CBS have? Someone's out of touch but it isn't the President.

I really don't know or care. There are a lot of Democrats in NY so they probably do OK.

In fact, their numbers are down. If the NYT can't sell in NYC, well, that says it all.
