It is all very true. I try to teach grammar to working adult college students. Two causes of the problems are:
1. No Latin training at all. This was a great help in teaching us grammar, sentence structure, advanced composition methods, and spelling;
2. Feel good English classes where no discipline is required in writing or speaking.

Journalists on TV speak horrible English, such as "Among we journalists..." and "The Pope is laying in the hospital bed..." (!?)

You are correct.

I studied Latin for four years in high school and one year in college.

Studying Latin was of inestimable value to me. My vocabulary is richer, and my understanding of the logic behind the rules of grammar is greater.

Amen! I didn't fully understand English grammar until I started taking Latin.

"The Pope is laying in the hospital bed..."

Well that's because if they said he was lying in the hospital bed, half of them would cite it as proof he was telling falsehoods. ;)

Among disseminators of what passes for news, the one thing that really annoys me is how they use the word "got" so often and where it really isn't appropriate.
Just the other night, I counted it used seven times in one short between the commercial spate.
