GENDER STUDIES
In Victorian times, scientists argued that women's brains were too small to be fully human. On the intelligence scale, researchers recommended classifying human females with gorillas.
The great 19th century neuroanatomist Paul Broca didn't see the situation as quite so dire, but he warned his colleagues that women were not capable of being as smart as men, "a difference that we should not exaggerate, but which is nonetheless real."
The president of Harvard University suggested that a lack of "innate ability" might help explain why women couldn't keep up with men in fields like math and science oh, wait, that one happened just last month.
Hold for a minute OK while I dig out my corset and bustle.
If that sounds snotty, I mean it to be.
I, for one, am ready to leave the 19th century behind. Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers can apologize all he wants, but the fact is that from a position of power he felt comfortable speculating about women's inadequate intelligence and ignoring years worth of science that proved him wrong.
I don't find that excusable. Period.
And I wonder why we women are so willing to tolerate this kind of behavior.
Summers raised the issue of women's lesser capabilities in an economic conference in Cambridge, Mass., in mid-January. And the most consistent response from women the one still resonating across the country is defensiveness.
A litany of female scholars quote studies proving that, yes, we girls can do long division, actually understand a chemical formula, comprehend a physical law or two and not only become professional scientists but do good work.
In fact, when allowed, women have done excellent science for decades, even since the corset-and-bustle days. The physicist Marie Curie won....

Wow...I see how shallow you are. You think I'm Fugly? I could get married like this (snap of fingers)...IF and WHEN I want. I see that looks though are that matter to you.....typical of a small man. It's a waste of time to talk to you....
Why? And don't give me that "wasted education" business.
Because it's WRONG? Dishonest. Waste of money (I'm sure the girl isn't paying in this case--she's USING her parents money), and it's a white trash/low life tactic. Girls like this are going to remain stupid their whole life.
At least I have made significant contributions to the future gene pool....
I meant, rather than staying in her home town. Not sitting LOL.
It's just deceiptful and dishonest. IF I were a guy, I would never trust this girl.....who the hells life ambition is to go to that extreme to FIND A HUSBAND? Especially at THAT age? Talk about acting desparate and needy! Gives the rest of us women a bad name.....
Judith Anne.....don't waste your parents money that way..it's dishonest and cheap.....just join match.com or some other singles clubs that 'weed out' the men.
Dishonest, huh? And you just joined on Feb 18, this year. My, my, you certainly know a lot about me, for a newbie.
FYI, I've been married 34 years, to the same husband. No other marriages. We were 22 when we met, both out of school. Both of us paid our own way through different schools in different states. We married a year after we met.
Earlier on this thread, I said as much. I guess you don't bother to read before posting.
What do you mean "white trash/low life tactic"? I'm not aware that white trash low lifes send their girls to college to meet husbands. I'd like to see something more substantial than your dislike to substantiate that rude statement. I don't think you have anything to back that up, and I don't think you know what you're talking about. Just my opinion--you might have white trash/low life experience, and in that case I bow to whatever special learning you possess.
I thought you were promoting/excusing the idea that girls should go to college (most likely using their parents money)...to find a man! I hope not.
NO Judith Anne....I am not white trash. I'm not going to give you my life story here....but you did, however, just take the low liberal road by saying that. Maybe you know more than me in that regard.
ROFL!!!
I wonder why you posted to me in the first place, after not reading anything on the thread beyond maybe this last page? I wonder why you're posting on this article....I wonder why you just joined, and jumped right into the end of this discussion?
There are a number of posters--ALL CONSERVATIVE--on both sides of this absolutely silly thread. Just a suggestion, calling your opponent a liberal is really lame. Really really lame. Implying that only white trash send their daughters to college to meet husbands is tantamount to name-calling--unles you're white trash yourself. I did give you the benefit of the doubt. And how is it dishonest to go to college to meet a husband? I didn't, BUT I certainly have no problem with those who do. You, on the other hand, called such women "dishonest" and accused them of wasting their parents' money.
My point is that a lot of growing up is done in college, and especially if you are from a rural area, going to college is a broadening experience that cannot help but make for a better wife or husband. And a wife with a degree and a husband from her four years is likely to be supportive, because she knows what it takes. And to educate her children better--and mothers do a LOT of educating long before kindergarten.
So spare me the name-calling and the attacks. You are as boring as your little New York friend.
Fair enough. I stand corrected where I misunderstood....

It's not important enough to me to debate this issue with you. Why the bold?? Good luck!
LOL. :)
