Vice President Dick Cheney likely will step down next year due to health reasons and be replaced by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, according to a report by geopolitical expert Jack Wheeler.
On his website, To the Point, Wheeler reports there's a "red-breasted rumor bird" flying around Capitol Hill that has whispered the same thing to most congressional committee chairmen.
"We all know that Dick Cheney has been the best vice president of modern times, perhaps in American history," one such chairman told Wheeler. "And we know that he absolutely will not run for president in 2008. Further, he has an unfortunate history of heart trouble. So let's just say none of us will be surprised if, sometime next year, he will step down from the vice presidency due to his health."
Continued the source: "Should this happen, President Bush would need to appoint his replacement, just as Richard Nixon chose Gerald Ford to replace Spiro Agnew. It is quite clear to us whom the president would choose should he need to: Condoleezza Rice."
Wheeler goes on to analyze what such a scenario would mean for the 2008 presidential election.
Writes Wheeler: "Being a sitting vice president places Condi in an impregnable position for the GOP nomination in 2008 and sucks every breath of wind from Hillary's sails. Historically, it's hard for a party to keep the White House after they've had it for eight years. This is George Bush and Dick Cheney's way to buck history and make it."
Serving as Bush's national security adviser during his first term, Rice took over the State Department last month.
Condi could be a good choice IF---and only if---she makes up her mind to cut away from the pack on immigration. If she stakes out a strong anti-illegal stand, and maybe lures Owens in as Veep, even her "pro-choice" views would be politically irrelevant.
Presidents Hoover and Eisenhower.
So they're going to force Cheney from office?
""according to a report by geopolitical expert Jack Wheeler.""
Jack Wheeler is very intelligent, but he isn't an oracle.
he looks like a truck driver.
only beautiful people need apply to the presidency and hollywood. look at what happened to bob dope.
no, just kidding folks.
It seems to me that a switch from Sec of State to VP is a demotion in many ways. Bush needs Rice in her current spot.
William Howard Taft, Ulysses Grant, and Zachary Taylor as well.
Who are "they"?..He is VP and obviously Bush wants hm right where he is.
Thanks. I don't know how I forgot about Eisenhower but I had no idea Hoover hadn't held office prior to the presidency. What was his background?
I should have added "in the 20th century."
Yes, Condi will replace Cheney and the President will nominate me for SOS. You heard it here first.
Junk rumors. Cheney isn't going anywhere and I'm getting tired of people trying to push him out the way they do Rummy. I can understand Libs wanting him out of the way, but conservatives need to stop allowing political analysis (IMO analysis that is on shaky ground) from influencing what is best for this country. Cheney is a wonderful VP and he's not going anywhere. IF Condi runs for President, she doesn't need VP to give her clout.
"They" had better be ready for an answer. If Cheney steps down in favor of Rice then the next two years will be filled with stories of how he was forced from office.
Two vice-presidents have resigned in our nation's history, John Calhoun and Spiro Agnew. I don't think Cheney wants to be the third.
Empty words.
Hoover was a popular Secretary of Commerce.
Condi has brains and experience. And she's a lot easier on the eyes than the Hildebeast. David Geffen was right; all Hildy has going for her is ambition.
Democrat Party charged with the governance of this country for most of the twentieth century, discharged their duties poorly. They deserve the garbage pail of history, nothing more.
Dwight Eisenhower, Ulysses S. Grant, and Andrew Jackson for sure.
Not so sure, but maybe Woodrow Wilson?
Even Abraham Lincoln only held one 2 year term in the House, and was defeated when he re-ran, and it was a long time before he ran for President.
Exactly right....there was much speculation and rumour this would happen before the election campaign...didn't happen.
Co-elected, remember ?
Sorry for the re-post of info already given.
I answered when I read the question, then went back to re-read the thread.
