Navy to Commission Attack Submarine Jimmy Carter

Special release from the U.S. Department of Defense

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy will commission its newest nuclear-powered attack submarine Jimmy Carter on Saturday, Feb. 19, during an 11 a.m. EST ceremony at Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, Conn.

The attack submarine Jimmy Carter honors the 39th president of the United States.

President Carter is the only U.S. president to have qualified in submarines. He has distinguished himself by a lifetime of public service, and has long ties to the Navy and the submarine force. Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946, served as a commissioned officer aboard submarines, and served as commander-in-chief from 1977 to 1981. Carter's statesmanship, philanthropy and sense of humanity earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Retired Adm. Stansfield Turner, a classmate of the president who served in the Carter administration as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Rosalynn Carter is the sponsor for the ship named for her husband, with daughter Amy serving as matron of honor. In a time-honored Navy tradition, Rosalynn Carter will give the first order to "man our ship and bring her to life!"

Jimmy Carter is the third and final submarine of the Seawolf class. As the most advanced submarine in the class, Jimmy Carter will have built-in flexibility and an array of new warfighting features that will enable it to prevail in any scenario, against any threat – from beneath Artic ice to shallow water. Differentiating Jimmy Carter from all other undersea vessels is its multimission platform (MMP), which includes a 100-foot hull extension to enhance payload capability. The MMP will enable Jimmy Carter to accommodate the advanced technology required to develop and test a new generation of weapons, sensors and undersea vehicles for naval special warfare, tactical surveillance and mine-warfare operations.

Capt. Robert D. Kelso, a native of Fayetteville, Tenn., will serve as Jimmy Carter’s first commanding officer, leading a crew of approximately 130 officers and sailors. Built by General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn., the 12,130-ton Jimmy Carter is 453 feet in length, has a beam of 40 feet, and can operate at speeds exceeding 25 knots when submerged.

I was never able to find the "Carter and the Wabbit" picture before - somebody posted it recently.

I've already saved it off onto my hard drive -- I saw it in the paper when it happened, and everybody was laughing their heads off.

The guy was a wuss, he's still a wuss. Naming a sub after him is just ridiculous - oughta be a garbage scow or if somebody wants to be nice a hospital ship.

Being a Marine, I was always teased by the Army/AF pukes about being a DEPARTMENT of the Navy! Now that I see that the Navy is naming a sub after Karter and it appears that they were right... I was a department of the Navy alright, the

MEN's DEPARTMENT!

Prediction: The USS Jimmy Carter will be the first boat with constantly manned MBT "chicken sticks", a BCP that always tilts to port, a reactor that scrams 30 seconds after being lit off, and a aux manuvering engine that serves as main propulsion...better lock the planes in full rise boys with a 10-degree up-bubble because this pig can't fly with a name like that!

The Navy is also announcing a new weapons system for deployment on the Carter: Subsurface Malaise Drone.

It circles endlessly in a state of depressing resignation, hoping to find a soft spot to lay down and cry.

Ha. Carter. Attack? BWAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH. Sub tries to negotiate, then backs down.

My thoughts, too.

Are they kidding with this?? I think a sub that only goes in reverse would be more fitting.

Will it have a UN crew?
Will it be armed with SAMs (Suckup Appeasement Missile)?
Can gay marriages be performed during missions?
Is it eco-friendly? Nonpolluting? Biodegradable?
Will it attack oil spills?
Does it have an automated white flag system?

This is insane. All I can figure is that his name was chosen in a compromise so the final two Nimitz class carriers could be named for Reagan and Bush the Elder.

"It will fly a white flag on which will be centered an attack rabbit."

It will go 25 knots in forward speed, 50 knots in reverse. Sub offers 1 forward mode, and 12 reverse modes. Upon detection of any problems, sub automatically submerges, and sits on the bottom for 4 years.

Armament bays have been gutted to make room for "habitat for humanity" supplies for far eastern dictators' countries.

I was in the Navy from 73 to 79..

Does anyone remember Karter Gutted the Navy -remember?

Remember how Reagan hammered Karter in the debates about
this - and then quickly started to rebuild the surface
AND SUB fleets!!

Oh well - I did not expect any media to recall - Even
the Navy times.
