To be fair, newsrooms aren't jam-packed on Sundays.
It's reflective of the fact that eyewitness reports are often worthless and contradictory.
This incident is quite similar to the demonstrations psych professors in college will do in large lecture classes; they'll show a film with a violent car accident (in one case they have an actor come in and steal a pocketbook from another actor, without warning) and then they ask the students to write down what they saw. Everyone writes down what they saw. As it turns out the descriptions turn out to be radically different.
Properly profiling perps would make it easier for the ordinary citizen to recognize them on the street, report them to the police and case closed. It would play h*ll with all that overtime pay cops count on.
