U.S. to fund desalination plant for Palestinians near Hadera
Haaretz ^ | Tuesday, February 08, 2005 | Sharon Kedmi

Posted on 02/08/2005 4:03:02 PM PST by Willie Green

The U.S. government plans to invest $250 million in a desalination facility in the Caesarea area to serve the Palestinian Authority. The facility, which will be close to the planned Hadera desalination plant, will provide 100 to 150 million cubic meters of drinking water annually to Palestinian West Bank residents.

It is unclear what method will be used to construct the plant, one of the largest in the world. An international tender may be published, but the U.S. administration usually closes its tenders to foreign companies.

Nor has it yet been determined whether the tender will be for construction of the facility, or a BOT tender in which the bidders build the plant, operate it for the duration of a franchise - during which time they are entitled to the revenue it generates - and then transfer the plant to the state.

Construction will be financed by the U.S. administration, and the water sales to the Palestinian Authority will be subsidized as part of its aid package.

Hey, why don't they use Arafat's billion or so nest egg--still in European banks--for this project?

Not another dime to the palis until they fess up to what they did with the other billions the Euros and USA have
given to them over the years. . .

The USA could use a desalinization plant--and "charity begins at home".

I'm fine with spending money on building infrastructure in unstable parts of the world. That's a huge part of what we're doing in Iraq. People who's basic needs (food, water, shelter, etc.) are being met are less likely to be angry radical violent revolutionaries.

Okay, please pile on now...

If you'd like to be on this middle east/political ping list, please FR mail me.

How funny. I believe we got the $40 million in immediate aid a few weeks ago by canceling the desalination project. To be a government accountant.

Good idea. Take it out of the money we plan to give to Egypt over the next few years or so.

U.S. funding, Israeli construction, what does the Palestinian Authority contribute?

Promise to not attack the Israelis for the next 24 hours?

How long before this project is halted due to attacks on the construction crew?

FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel ping list.

WARNING: This is a high volume ping list

I agree and I think the article implies that we'll be getting back some portion of that $250 million.

And since the Palestinians don't think they should pay for utilities, I suppose we'll have to pay those bills too. And maintain the plant. And maintain a pipeline distribution network.

I don't have a problem with helping turd-world countries with infrastructure-building, but I have a h-u-g-e problem in throwing US Taxpayers' monies down a murderous muslim hole.

How much water needs to be manufactured? How much does this one plant manufacture? What would be the total cost for manufactured water for the entire world? Get some of these numbers and then we can look at finances.

Wonder if they'll make 24 hours. I can't verify it on any news source, but Fox News reported a Jewish civilian shot by a gunman a little while ago.

If we're coughing up a quarter of a billion for the PA, they should at least be willing in return to remove the anti-semitic propaganda from their childrens' school books.
