Matthews: White House Staged Slain Marine Mom's Hug
NewsMax.com ^ | 2/3/05

MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews suggested last night that the high point of President Bush's State of the Union Address - the emotional hug between grateful Iraqi voter Safia Taleb al-Suhail and Janet Norwood, mother of a Marine who died liberating her country - was staged by the White House.

The cynical host apparently first voiced his skepticism during a commercial break. His comments were immediately seized upon by "Hardball" guest, MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan when the show returned.

This accusation by Chrissy seems like one thing to me: Damage control

There's a lot of confidence around right now on our side, and there's good reason for it, don't get me wrong.

But let's not think that the Demcorats still aren't dangerous. They are falling apart and the desperation is setting in. The lies and distortions are becoming more blatant and more fervent.

A wounded animal is at it's most dangerous.

I used to think that we needed the democrats to balance out politics, that at some point the 2 parties could work together.

I still think we need balance, but I am at the point of thinking that the Democratic party, as it is today, needs to be stomped out of existence, and all of the politicians and perpetrators sent back home to try and find a real job. I would welcome back a real Democratic Party with actual values that match up to the name. It's not that I am trying to squelch dissent, they can dissent all they want, but they are sad and pittiful as a political force and should just hang it up for their own dignity.

Bones

SURE THANG.

On cue they were told to hug one another.

Damn, you're either totally dense or totally cynical.

I don't think he's all white, once I saw his hair with a lot of silver in it though.

But who knows if that was real or not, now that we know he colors it.

Maybe he needs to go to John Kerry's hairdresser. Or clinton's. Chrissie's hair isn't looking too great lately.

You are a self-admitted "entertainment junkie" (your about page) which explains where you are coming from. And no, the entertainment world is not a real one. I am cynical also about many things - but not the event which occurred last night. BTW, the parents are from Texas and Texans hug a lot. That is real.

That's not what I said, in fact I said multiple times that isn't what happened. So if there's a dense person in this it's the person that is putting words in someone else's mouth.

Ask yourself this, why weren't they introduced before? Since it is a predictable human reaction that two peole in their respective circumstances would become very emotional upon meeting each other why was that saved until they were in front of the cameras? Decisions were made, decisions that helped improve the probability of a good TV moment that would help sell the president's message to the American people, that's called staging.

The response of the Democrats/ and Liberals of the PURPLE FINGER VICTORY VOTERS.
PURPLE DAZE .......................................

Purple daze , now they rule and rein ,
Lately things they don't seem the same.
Acting funny, but don't know why ,
Delusion ed DEMS , and now we cry.

Purple daze , now abounds,
Now we know the DEMS are going down.
I'm not happy , more in misery,
Whatever it is, the Repubs scare the hell out of me.

Help me, help me , oh no !

Yeah , Purple daze all in my cries,
Don't know if we will stay and survive.
The Repubs got us going, going running blind,
Is it tomorrow, or is it the end of our time.
Ooh , help me , oh yeah . oh no !

I'll not assist you by posting to you after this.

But do carry on.

Yep, I've learned a lot about how TV events are put together. I'm not cynical about the mighty hug, I'm sure it was real and that both women were genuinely emotional and sincerely expressing themselves. I just understand that there was a process that was gone through to to allow them to express their emotions on camera instead of off camera, and that process is called staging. And as long as it's done to the limited degree I feel this one was I have no problem with it, and don't think anyone else should either. This wasn't like Billyboy having a pile of rocks staged so he could do something "meaningful" in his photo op, this was simply a matter of putting ingredients together in the hopes of something happening. Nothing bad or deceptive, simply structuring events for TV.
