Matthews: White House Staged Slain Marine Mom's Hug
NewsMax.com ^ | 2/3/05

MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews suggested last night that the high point of President Bush's State of the Union Address - the emotional hug between grateful Iraqi voter Safia Taleb al-Suhail and Janet Norwood, mother of a Marine who died liberating her country - was staged by the White House.

The cynical host apparently first voiced his skepticism during a commercial break. His comments were immediately seized upon by "Hardball" guest, MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan when the show returned.

Peace Corps I believe in late 50's

Peace Corps was created by Jack Kennedy, elected in 1960. Your dates are off a tad, but close.

They wouldn't be saying it if poeple like Matthews didn't put the idea in their head. They now have to be more "enlightened" and suggest well of course it was staged! Who are they impressing with this feigned world weary attitude? No real red blooded American that is for damn sure.

This is an attempt to take away the power of the moment because it badly damaged the Dems. It an an attempt to take focus off the momentum for S.S. These people are being played. We should just ignore them and do what the Dems don't want us to do. Go on offense and push S.S. reform.

Honored guests are ALWAYS seated near First Lady Laura!

The SEATING was arranged...DUH... but NOT the

spontaneous emotion between the Norwoods and the Iraqi woman.

And they said YES, hello! Lots of people ask to go to SOTU, only a few get selected, and they get selected for a reason, and that reason is generally the same: good TV.

She didn't know who the woman was BEFORE the SOTU began, but they did inform them of each other during the speech, or are you saying they're just huggers?

Just heard that on her radio show yesterday. She said one of her friends saw him at the Four Seasons salon in DC sitting in a chair with the foil on his hair, last week.

She was talking about it yesterday.

His hair definitely looks different now compared to the last time I watched him a couple of weeks ago.

But I always suspected he got it colored. It's blonder sometimes, not so blond other times.

Actually last night, it looked like the front was a bit reddish, which happens if you get too much bleach on the hair. The back was blonder than the front from what I could tell.

What did Matthews say when Clinton "stumbled upon" some rocks in the sand and arranged them into a cross?

Then how do you explain the so called conservatives on this board parroting the same line?

I'm taking the TV view.

SOTUs didn't start off made for TV, but they did start off made for the media. It's a pre-planned opportunity for a President to lay out his plans to America and try to get the people on his page so that maybe they can apply some pressure to their representatives to get on his page. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Absolutely the Rat boo was planned, and the lameness of their plan just shows why they keep losing.

It's just so darned frustrating to see a genuine expression being dismissed as "staged" by so many people. God bless those two women--some people wouldn't know "genuine" if it jumped up and bit them on the hindside.

Those who accuse, usually accuse others of the same things they do themselves. The Democrats are all about staging things, therefore they think the Republicans do the same thing.

And Pat Buchanan seizes on it.

Why doesn't he profess shahada like Paul al-Craig Roberts and at least be honest about whose side he's on?

Of course, I could be too rough on the guy... he DID lose a relative at Dachau, after all.

Matthews gave them the talking point. The MSM picked it up. These people on the board are either

1) People that want to hurt the administration

2) World weary cynics

Only Demoncrats would think of staging something like that - therefore, they think everyone would.

You just made the case for SPONTANEITY, pal.

They were honoring our soldiers and the Iraqi people.

Don't be so damn cynical.

Laura's always got the best DC gossip.

She was talking about seeing George Steponallofus at the gym, she was commenting that he didn't even break a sweat when he was talking to her. Was laughing that maybe he wasn't working too hard.

So he called the program and said that his trainer was just irate that she would say that George wasn't in good shape!

It was pretty funny.

She told about dining at one of her favorite restaurants, and Rumsfeld was at a neighboring table, but didn't see her.

She didn't want to disturb him, but towards the end of the meal, she had desserts sent to his table. She said he didn't eat it but was very appreciative of it.

Fun program. The gossip is interspersed with a lot of great discussions.
