The U.S TV audience would rather watch freaks sing out of tune than President Bush and Democrats wax politics

That simply shows the red/blue state divide. Apparently Idol transcends partisanship yet out lasts the average liberal's attention span.

"Idol was on 8:00 pm est. The SOTU was on at 9:00."

Not only that, but IDOL was only on one channel...SOU was on at least five, which usually drives HUT (Households Using TV) levels down as people turn off the set or sends viewers to cable/dish nets. The fact that the net averages for the SOU had the exact same share as IDOL is really impressive. Drudge is off the mark on this one.

But with all the applause lines and such, it seemed a waste of time. What's the point? I can read the speech later, ...

Yes, but did you see the Grand Finale, the emotional embrace between the Iraqi woman and the mother of a fallen Marine?

Am I the only person in the U.S. who has never watched American Idol, nor cares if I ever see it?

Not on at the same time.... What is the point of putting a siren up over that?

Exactly, and as pointed out already most people watch these speeches on cable. I watch in on CSPAN so I don't have to listen to the talking heads prattle on and on.

I was watching the President while chatting with my daughter online...she (in college) was watching Idol or the Newlyweds or some such garbage...but this is what she instant messaged to me.."u and dad can tell me what the prez said, k mom!" There ya go, she's a Bush supporter, but she also a college kid looking to relax a bit after a long day of study..I don't blame her for not tuning in to the speech. But I did let her know that Bush was awesome!

Another perfect example of the mind of the average american citizin. Most can care less about SS or Iraq because they feel it will not effect them or it does not matter what happens because they cannot do nothing about it.

Frightening that more people know what brittany spears favorite nail color is over what is happening to them tax wise in the future.

More bluntly..They just don't give a rat's a**.

I saw a picture and read about it over my morning coffee. I am pretty sure I can find the video online if I want to.

Actually, since FOX is a broadcast network the comparison between the audience watching IDOL vs. those watching the broadcast coverage of the SOTU is a more appropriate measurement. Measuring Idol vs. cable would be an orange vs. apples issue.

The "issue" was framed by Drudge as viewers watching the State of the Union vs. the viewers watching a fluff piece such as Idol.

While FOX is a broadcast network, FOX News is cable.

Most households in the U.S. have cable service. Distinguishing between those households and those who only have a broadcast option would severely skew whatever result you get in terms of total viewers.

Correct Idol was on before the State of the Union and came on after as well...will dispute the ratings under these circumstances.

Pictures spoke louder than words. Sorry you thought it a waste of time..it was one of those cases where "you have to be there" to feel the emotion which cannot be spelled out in words.

I don't doubt it was emotional for some people.

Misleading headline, to come up with those numbers they had to include the hour after the President had finished speaking, when the numbers had dropped.

Here's the fine print:

'AMERICAN IDOL' TOPS NETWORK COVERAGE FOR STATE OF UNION
Thu Feb 03 2005 10:42:09 ET

The U.S broadcast TV audience would rather watch freaks sing out of tune than President Bush and Democrats wax politics, overnight ratings show.

One hour of IDOL on one network pulled a higher ratings average than 2 hours of STATE OF THE UNION -- on three networks, combined!

IDOL/FOX [8 PM ET]

17.9 RATING/26 SHARE

STATE OF THE UNION TOTAL BROADCAST NETWORK AVG [9-11 PM ET]

17.6 RATING/26 SHARE

MORE

Flying solo without Democrats during the 9 PM [ET] hour, Bush did top IDOL, but it took all 4 major broadcast networks to do it. The 9 PM total combined average on ABCCBSFOXNBC hit a 22.4 rating/31 share.

But when Bush left the stage, and the Democrats and media analysis took over, the numbers faded.

STATE OF UNION 10 PM ET/COMBINED 3 NETWORK AVG. [ABC, CBS, NBC]

12.8 RATING/20 SHARE

All numbers do not include cable news coverage of the Washington event.

Developing...

Drudge's headline is a lie, see post #37

He does seem to have Pat Buchanan on a lot, maybe he's a fan of Tancredo, too?

Why did he include the hour AFTER Bush was speaking?

Um, my local Fox has news/sitcoms at 10 P.M.

What a bogus story.
