Hil vs. Pirro in '06? - GOPers eager for DA to run
New York Daily News ^ | 1/27/06 | JOE MAHONEY

Posted on 01/27/2005 1:15:07 AM PST by kattracks

When Sen. Hillary Clinton runs for reelection in 2006, her opponent might just be another high-profile attorney from Westchester.

Westchester County District Attorney Jeanine Pirro is considering challenging the former First Lady, according to political insiders.

The GOP crimefighter, who is running for reelection this year, is not publicly discussing plans for higher office.

But Pirro has a dizzying fund-raising schedule and the enthusiastic backing of Gov. Pataki. "We love Jeanine," said a source in Pataki's camp.

Sources say it is becoming less likely by the day that former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who may be eying the White House, will challenge Clinton for the Senate seat.

A Clinton-Pirro contest has the makings of a marquee matchup between two controversial and ambitious women.

"This wouldn't be just a battle," longtime Pirro friend and Westchester radio station owner Bill O'Shaughnessy told the Daily News. "It would be a catfight, and my money would be on Jeanine."

"There'll be more interest in this than in 'Desperate Housewives,'" he added.

Never one to shy from the limelight, Pirro has an active schedule planned.

Last night, Mayor Bloomberg hosted a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser for Pirro at his upper East Side digs. On Feb 10, she will stage a $250-a-head soiree headlined by radio and TV personality Sean Hannity. And this weekend, Pirro is booked to speak to influential Conservative Party operatives.

That party's leader, Mike Long, said Pirro's crime-fighting pedigree makes her an attractive candidate to his group, even though she is pro-choice. "I certainly think Jeanine could go toe-to-toe with the senator," said Long.

Pirro carries the baggage of husband Al Pirro's 2000 conviction on federal tax evasion charges, which included allegations he fudged the couple's joint returns to support their lavish lifestyle.

But O'Shaughnessy insisted she could get around that issue. "You cannot hold the omissions of the husband against the wife who has her own career," he said.

Pirro's spokeswoman, Ann Marie Corbalis, insisted her boss plans to remain district attorney "as long as the people of Westchester want her."

But Westchester GOP consultant Mike Edelman said Pirro is "taking a good hard look" at the 2006 state attorney general race, and a challenge against Clinton.

I don't. I don't believe she's sincere about anything. But I'm going to see what tactics she comes up with.

I've read that both Pataki and Giuliani have 2008 presidential aspirations. I find it interesting that skeletons in the closet don't seem to matter any more. Pirro and her husband have their tax problems and Giuliani his adultery (not to mention their liberal stances on "social" issues) - it must be that NY Republicans are not as into "family values" as the red state Republicans supposedly were on election day, 2004

Then they both are fooling themselves. If their motive is to get elected, their only chnces would be in NY. That leaves one for Guv and one for Senate. And even then, both races would be difficult to win in NY.

No, no. I want her to lose the seat in '06 and get her out of my State and off the world stage permanently. It will be an uphill battle for her to face one loss and expect to walk away with the big prize in 2008!

Don't know how viable a candidate Pirro will be but if Hillary's baggage didn't spoil her chances with New Yorkers, chances are Pirro's baggage may also get a pass. Would be quite an interesting race but my fingers are crossed that Rudy will come to his senses and run in '06 and forego '08. He may be the country's mayor but will not be its President, IMHO.

And didn't they give Socks away to Betty Currie?

Once the cat was going to pee on the carpets in Hillary's own home (as opposed to their eight-year temporary quarters) the family dumped their beloved pet on the hired help.

According to Larry Nichols.....AS stated on What's Right , What's left..........Hillary Clinton is going to run in 2008.......as a REPUBLICAN

As long as it has an (R) behind it's name, half the denizens of FR will support it.

Actually I agree with you Radioactive. I think she may run as Republican.
We see she is more conservative on illegal immigration than our current Republican president.
The pro-abortion speech she made on Monday called for common ground, cutting back on abortions.

Sorry...I didn't know BILL & Hillary were posters on this forum.

Sorry, but I know Larry Nichols and he is a liar. I don't need Bill & Hillary Clinton to tell me that!
