It did not look like a bumper to me. It looked about 4 feet long and 2 feet high.

Suicide-by-train? Lord have mercy. That man killed nine people and survived?

Two other sheriff deputies injured.

(The live feed shows about one third of one car completely gone where it hit the parked UP engine.)

Just a guess, but he/she must have bailed out????

I can't imagine surviving that in the car.

Is Jack Bauer on scene yet? What was the story line of their train derailment?

Reasonable, my tendencey is to use such incidents to highlight the rarity of accidents and the preciousness of life.

And the importance of living each day to it's fullest.

Five and seven is a bit young for that...

They hedged when asked - said they have several law enforcement agencies investigating, will find out soon enough.

200 patients treated. 100 on each side of track. Vehicle on track began the accident - Jeep Cherokee. Had expired plates. They know who the driver was - unknown if it was stalled. Unknown if there were passengers in the Jeep.

Looking for owner of vehicle - uh oh.

Nine fatalities. Sheriff from Simi Valley rode the train for security reasons James Tutitto died.

Union Pacific train first hit the Jeep Cherokee. Focussing on wreckage.

Hero, the search dog is looking for live survivors. Same dog used at La Conchita mud slide tragedy.

The way they sounded in the news conference, it didn't sound like it was an accident.

Wait a minute -- they're looking for the vehicle owner? I thought they officially said he survived?

Let's hope they find him. Repeating shock of news conference. Used "shocking" several times on KABC TV. Southbound train from Moorpark hit the Jeep.

Northbound train derailed intersection - point of contact crossing guard was down - went around it, stalled or did it purposefully and abandoned it, driver survived; stunning, shocking the reporter is stressing those words - unusual for KABC reporters.

Car was pushed 150 yards by Southbound train then slammed by Northbound train.

UPcrawfish here... been a little busy with this thing going on but here is a summary of information as we know it here in the UP Incident Center..

This is SCRA track - SCRA trains - SCRA dispatched

603am pt / SCRA train M100-26 moving on main #2 reportedly struck a vehicle (jeep Cherokee) at protected road crossing. Impact derailed the commuter train.
Derailed cars struck passing SCRA train M901-26 on the #1 main resulting in derailment of multiple passenger cars.

There was a Union Pacific (UP) train sitting in the Glendale siding since last night. Train is a work train with ballast for repairs to the Santa Barbara Subdivision. The train had no crew on it. It would not have run until after the am SCRA fleet had run. Collateral damage..

Hopefully this will help with some of the rumor and speculations... UPcrawfish

KNBC live feed has audio now also. Good info -- oh oh, speaker hinting again "could be other reasons" for that vehicle to be on tracks.

They said "driver survived" and they are looking for owner of vehicle. The plates were expired, no confirmation that driver was legally driving the Jeep.

Now backing up on driver is alive vs. driver is unknown (left scene?). Reporter acknowledged Sheriff was speaking in great anger and hurt since he lost one of his Deputies. Over 20 years as a Sheriff Deputy and he was killed in this accident.

Five critical patients. 15 at Huntington Memorial. Three different trains. 2 Metro Links, one Union Pacific.

I got stuck in two accidents forcing me through neighborhoods for an hour so I've only had KNX on...they've had a lot of interviews with passengers on the trains.

Baca (as those of you watching any news probably heard) was VERY outraged (his words) at the vehicle that caused this and about how everyone knows not to stop on the tracks, etc.

(I've not read through the rest of the thread, so sorry if I repeat this next part)

A uniformed officer on his way to work (but it sounded like he's one that might patrol trains from what Baca said? Got a little lost at his explanation) was killed on one of the MetroLink trains. His next of kin was notified and Baca released his name.

9 confirmed fatalities (as of the 8:40ish press conference)

Actually, Fox is slightly off on the pronunciation. I live in LA and here's the correct pronunciation: Las Feelis. (I know: it's not phonetic.)
