Your Homeland Security dollars at work

Do you remember when immigration officials sent out flight school visa approval notices for two of the 9/11 hijackers -- six months after they had committed their suicide attacks on America?

President Bush proclaimed his outrage, four federal immigration officials were reassigned, and Washington vowed that such embarrassing bureaucratic paperwork snafus would never happen again.

I'm sorry to report to you that it has, in fact, happened again.

On Jan. 15, immigration officials sent a notice to Eugueni Kniazev of Brooklyn, N.Y. The letter informs Kniazev, an immigrant from Siberia, that he is now "deemed to be a lawful permanent resident of the United States." The notice directs Kniazev to obtain a new alien registration receipt card (what we commonly call a "green card") and instructs him to appear in person at the immigration office at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City with his passport and three recent photos.

But Eugueni Kniazev won't be appearing at Federal Plaza. He won't be going anywhere. Kniazev, 47, was an employee of the Windows on the World restaurant located on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center's North Tower. After working his way up from dishwasher to facilities manager and living the American dream, Kniazev was murdered in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Let me repeat that for the clueless paper-pushers at the Department of Homeland Security: Eugueni Kniazev won't be picking up his green card because he has been dead for nearly three-and-a-half years.

What on earth is wrong with our federal government? Can you imagine how upsetting it must have been for family members to receive the letter? . . .

A horrible twist to that tale also, but very worrying concerning the security lapse.

How can this be improved because it has to get better.

Well Michelle do you think the dead man sent notice to everyone saying, "Please cancel my request as I am now dead." ???

Michelle is a smart cookie but lately she is reaching.

Welcome to FReeRepublic.

What are you thoughts on this?

Bush has had 3 years to hold people accountable and almost no one has been held accountable. We are only now cleaning out the viper's nest of left-wing partisans and outright Osama worshipping kooks at CIA.

Pathetic.

They could have sold that document for big bucks to some guys with names like Mohammed or Abu or whatever. Phony license, phony ID, phony green card.

So what if it's difficult? (In fact it's not hard-- just about every death is reported to the SS admin).

How much money are we paying thousands of people to get it right? How many more people have to get killed before we have Federal agemcies effective at monitoring immigrants?

Much as I enjoy Malkin's columns, I think she's stretching it here. There's no central record of deaths for either citizens on non-citizens, so how was INS to know if his survivors didn't tell them?

She might better have remarked on the application's taking (at least) three and a half years to filter through the system.

So we clean house at the CIA but does this fix things elsewhere?

The bureaucrats it would seem need to be connected to databases within the security agencies. this then leads to data security issues I would guess? Could those bureaucrats be trusted with that data?

I didn't say that all is well. But this story is a waste of print. Interdepartmental communication is abysmal at all levels of government. Posting deaths is not going to save any lives. So much more than Michelle knows is going on to monitor those who pose a threat. More needs to be done. But this story is a non-story IMHO.

Not only that, but a few weeks after 9-11, a new a dozen or so Syrian nationals came to Meacham Field in Fort Worth to start training to be pilots.

Michelle is a smart cookie but lately she is reaching.

Thank you.

She gets on my last nerve with the attitude and tone she adopts. She'll excite a certain faction but turn the rest of us off.

Cat got your tongue? Or do you just not have an opinion on your post? If that is the case why did you post it? Are you fearful of the threat that dead people pose?

Speak up

She hits the mark sometimes but this one and a few others lately indicate she is just writing.
