SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Republican state lawmaker countered a Senate colleague's dispersal of an anti-polygamy book by passing out folders defending the practice as natural and not necessarily harmful.
Sen. Carlene Walker, of Cottonwood Heights, said she was offended by the title of the book "God's Brothel" that Senate Minority Whip Ron Allen distributed, and she wanted to balance its views.
"Polygamy is a frequent, and arguably, from a historical perspective, a most normal, human sexual relationship throughout most of human history in a majority of societies around the world," reads one of the passages in the folder.
It came from the Centennial Park Action Committee, a group of women near the Utah-Arizona state line who say it's unfair to characterize polygamists as "oppressed," "abused" or "brainwashed."
Walker said she has known polygamists who are "fine, honest, educated, wonderful people."
"To characterize the whole polygamy community as abusive to children and the welfare system is inaccurate," Walker said.
Allen says people are misunderstanding his point of demonstrating abuses in polygamous relationships, and he passed out 104 copies of the book to legislators because he wanted them to understand polygamy isn't harmless.
"It's not fair to say we should ignore it," he said.
Allen helped enact a child bigamy law in 2003 that made forced marriages of minors a second-degree felony punishable by one to 15 years in prison.
Before, the offense carried only 30 days in jail, and was rarely enforced, Allen said. He said the marrying of teenage girls was a common practice among some of Utah's isolated polygamist communities until the state served notice it was cracking down.
The book, written by Salt Lake City author Andrea Moore-Emmett, tells the stories of 18 women who claim they suffered rape, incest and violence in polygamous communities.
Copies of the book were donated by publisher Pince-Nez Press, of San Francisco.
Polygamy is among the teachings of Mormon church founder Joseph Smith. But the practice was abandoned by the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints more than a century ago as the Utah territory sought statehood.
The Utah Constitution bans polygamy and the mainstream Mormon church now excommunicates those who advocate it. But it's believed that tens of thousands in Utah and more than 30,000 across the West continue to practice
King Herod had at least several wives. he married his brothers wife. John the Baptist went to him and told him that it was adultery to marry his brother's wife. Why did not John tell him he was committing adultery with the others?
King David had 3 or 4 wives. He took Bath Sheeba. Nathan , God's prophet told David he was committing adultery with Bath Sheeba. How come Nathan did not mention anything about the other wives he had?
Moses married Ziporah the Midianite. Moses later married an Ethipian woman. Miriam and Aaron murmered because he married an Ethipian woman. God turned Miriam white as a leper. How come she was punished by God himself for complaining about Moses's "adultery"?
God seems to be either two faced or awful forgetful when it concerns his prophets
Please give us the exact verse(s) where polygamy was done away with or give us the name of God"s prophet that delivered the revelation.
No, thanks. The Oak Ridge Boys once sang that trying to love two women is like a ball and chain. I shudder to think how much weight more than two would add.
As far as Abraham you it got kind of close. Abraham's mistake was he lost faith in what God Had told him. At the bequest of Sarah he took Haggar as a concubine (wife). Haggar had Ismael. Sarah had Issacc. Because Haggar was a concubine Isacc was in line for the inheritance. It had nothing to do with adultery. Abraham later married Keturah also.
If God does not condemn divorce which he hates then how do we know he condemns polygamy which He never says he hated, but in fact said He blessed many men with multiple wives ie. King David, Samuel.
And the law for divorce was ?????????? because of Moses God allowed divorce BECAUSE OF THE HARDNESS OF YOUR HEART. So all one is saying when they get a divorce is that they are hard hearted
The fact is that evil men want monogamy. They want one wife and a pool of available single women that they can prostitute and fornicate with with no responsibility. Monogamy is very anti woman. This is partly why woman and children are so degraded and humiliated in cultures that push monogamy to the extreme such as the west does.
In a monogamous culture women are forced to marry jerks because all he good ones are already taken. this leads to many problems.
We are not supposed to unequally yoked (married) to unbelievers as Christians. There are twice as many Christian women as men. Who do they marry in your monogamous system, or are they just SOL? They marry the jerks that is who. This is why the divorce rate is as high with Christians as with world.
God Himself took two wives. Ezekiel 23:37. These two sisters (Judah and Samaria) committed adultery against God himself. Adultery being sex with someone other than your husband. So God obviously had two wives here.
You would make God a liar and an adulterer. You would murmur against God's annointed : Moses, Abraham, Jacob, Joshua, King David, Solomon , Samuel etc.
It does work here and most likely it won't change.
So what you are saying is that Moses, Abraham, King David, Solomon, Jacob, Samuel is, "The words "decent," "respectable," or "responsible" do not apply to this kind of "man."

Also said they were naked so I guess if we want to be married we should run around naked?
It does not work that way any more. That is why a man and a woman have to both work and even then they are piling up tons of debt.
It is only illegal in some places. There is no law in most states that prevent cohabitation with two women any more. If there were then we would all see the hypocrisy of all the womaninzing men that want to fornicate and commit adultery instead of being right with two women
No that is not the only reason. Christs is the groom , the church being the bride. Marriage is a physical manifestattion of this spiritual truth. God has many churches, but a church can not have many Gods
Elaborate Please..:)
Monagamy is for the benefit of MEN, it numerically guarantees very man, maggot and moron a woman. Polygamy, on the other hand benefits women by insisting on a high level of character and performance in providing for a family; that ofers several women the benefit of a good husband rather than having to choose from among the losers. It insists that every man be able to support the wife (wives) he has and removes the need for the social welfare system. Now, for those of you call yourselves Bible believing Cristians ,Why does God regulate polygamy in the Bible? A banned practice is not regulated is it? Read Deuteronomy 21:15 1Samuel 12:8 Here multiple wives are counted as a blessing. Ezekiel 23 Here God portrays Himself as a husband married to two sisters. Read Man and Woman in Biblical Law by Tom Shipley from Cafe Press
