WOULD YOU LET YOUR DAUGHTER WEAR THIS PROM DRESS?
New York Post ^ | January 24, 2005 | DANICA LO

PROM princess or porn queen?

This prom dress is so skimpy, even the designer's CEO wouldn't let his teenage daughter wear it. But the dangerously revealing gown, prominently advertised in Seventeen Prom, YM Prom and Teen Prom, and on sale in a Midtown shop, is a top seller for the company this season.

"I was shocked when I first saw it, but now it's one of our top 20 dresses nationwide," says Nick Yeh, the CEO of Xcite, the Stafford, Texas, company that designed the dress and some 200 other styles this season.

"I have a 15-year-old daughter and, no, I would not recommend she wear this dress.

"As a businessman," he adds, "I'm not judging what a teenager should wear or not wear. It's up to the parents to decide for their own children."

In fact, some shops in smaller cities require girls to bring in parental permission slips to buy the dress, Yeh told The Post.

At Elite Designs, a formal shop in Midtown that has the barely-there gown on a mannequin, owner Surinder Nagpal says, "We've gotten a few calls about that dress. Originally, I wasn't going to stock [it], but my sales associate told me that girls would want it, so we're stocking it in black and red."

So far, says Helen Rodriguez, Nagpal's sales associate, no one has bought the $495 gown - but it just arrived.

I doubt it. I think it is just their personality. I know someone who acts the exact same way. So high strung that I can't believe that they haven't had an aneurysm.

Not so silent there.

LOL--Can you blame me? A dress like that would make anyone break a vow of silence :)

Oh man...I had to model in a dress that looked (and I kid u not) EXACTLY like that, but in some freakish weird blue-green color

The dress belonged to my former best friend's mom as the dress that was worn by the bridesmaids for her wedding...

Um Quix, I don't mean to pry, but who is "his royal denseness"? Are you talking about Vlad. He is dense but now that he has Vivien, he is better.

Did you mean Huevos? Because that makes me wonder if this dress won't be very popular with the (ahem) transexual highschool students...

I could do without the tattoo on her back.

I agree. It's the tat that looks trashy, not her bare ass.

A) a daughter of mine reaching that age would not even IMAGINE to EVER appear out of her bathroom looking like that--much less to a prom.

B) If she had some sort of brain-fade/tinfoil hat brain rearrangement such that she did appear before my eyes asking if she could wear that--she'd have just foregone the whole event for even daring to ask.

One expects some level of judgment transmission in childrearing. If it hasn't begun to routinely occur by age 3-4, then the parent needs to go back to school to learn how to parent. But those problems need prefixed at those ages, not waiting until puberty to try and deal with them.

Sheesh.

Now, I came here and read the comments. What pictures? Where are the pictures? I thoroughly enjoyed the intellectual discussion and do not see what all of the fuss is about.

Hippie? Dear Lord no. These were big, Catholic Church weddings...extravaganzas of color and pagentry. Big families require big wedding parties...and in the early 80s the 'rainbow' theme was big (at least in Western PA). You found a dress that looked good on absolutely NO body type, and then you selected a different color for each bridemaid/attendant. My hair is auburn so I got green. Twice. One was a minty, peasanty affair, the other was a slightly more crayonny green, Supreme/girl group wannabe dress. There was the pink and silver one (mentioned above...sequins get very, very hot by the way); and a peachy floral that I actually liked, but they made us all get our hair done (together) and we got these weird little flowers stuck in our hair. What can I say...it was the 80s.

Not at all attractive, to me, either.

Kind of like an advertisement saying:

"SINCE I DON'T THINK MUCH OF MYSELF; SINCE I DON'T HAVE ANY BRAINS TO ATTRACT YOU WITH; SINCE MY ALLOWING DIALING MOSCOW AND CARLSBAD CAVERNS ARE ALL I HAVE TO OFFER, I THOUGHT I'D GET THE NEGOTIATIONS STARTED ABOUT THE GOODIES RIGHT AWAY"

GREAT QUESTION. I HOPE SOME GUYS THAT AGE ANSWER.

Personally, I'd think that any guy worth his salt would run away in embarrassment for the gal.

Further, that he'd think too much of himself to stoop to such a cheap relationship.
